Maheshwar
is a beautiful town, located just 91 km from the city of Indore. It is nestled in the Vindhya ranges
and lies on the north bank of the River Narmada. Maheshwara has always been
historically significant with origins traced back as the ancient capital of
King Kartvirajun's, which was then known as Mahishmati, placidly located on the
banks of the Narmada
River.
The
meaning of Maheshwar is the 'Abode or Lord Shiva' and has a special
significance to Shiva bhakts. The grandeur
of the ancient temple town of Maheshwar
is further enhanced by the huge fort complexes and numerous ancient temples.
Maheshwar came into prominence and prosperity during the reign of the Holkar
queen, Ahilya Bai. The intricately sculpted pillars and balconies in the fort
and palace are breathtakingly beautiful. The exquisite carvings on the doorways
and minarets reflect the grandeur and elegance of the Holkar dynasty. These
ancient temples and other monuments add their charm to the modern glory of
Maheshwar.
It is well
known as a famous centre of handloom weaving since the 5th century
AD and even today, the city is famous for its distinctive hand-woven saris popular
all over, for the exquisite floral patterns, introduced by the Holkar Queen
Ahilya Bai, now referred to as Maheshwari saris.
A unique
feature of this city is that the numerous ghats
dotting the banks of River Narmada are individually named after the different
dynasties. The sunrises and sunsets as seen from the bank of Narmada
are par excellence. Verdant green woods and tree lined surrounding areas are
home to numerous birds.
The town
has been able to retain its rustic charms and has become a popular vacation
destination in the recent years. The balmy climate makes it a perfect holiday
destination any time of the year. The perfect ambience and peaceful serene
atmosphere is just to right for your mind, body and soul.
