Mapusa is the capital of the Bardez taluka in the North Goa District. It is a commercial town and has many attractions like beaches, churches, temples and museums. Calangute, Anjuna, Vagator, Sinquerim and Baga, situated near Mapusa, are the most popular beaches of Goa. Many activities like paragliding, parasailing, banana boat ride and surfing can be enjoyed at these beaches.
The Sri Kalika temple and Sri Morjee temple are the two important temples situated near the Mapusa town. The Sri Morjee temple is dedicated to Bodhgeshwar, also known as Kanakeshwar Baba. The presiding deity of the Sri Kalika temple is Goddess Kali. The Mascarenhas Mansion is another popular attraction near the Mapusa. The mansion was constructed in beautiful Portuguese architectural style, during the rule of the Portuguese.
Several churches like the Church of St. Jerome, Basilica of Bom Jesus and Church of Our Lady of Rosary are also situated nearby. The Church of St. Jerome was constructed on the ruins of the chief pagoda of a monastery. The Basilica of Bom Jesus is the most famous church in Goa and is situated in proximity to Mapusa. This church has the remains of St. Francis Xavier and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Panaji, the capital of Goa, is located at a distance of around 14.1 km from the destination. The Goa State Museum and St. Michael's Church are the famous attractions of Panaji. The Fort Aguada is another popular site which belongs to the 16th century and has been converted into a central jail.
The Mapusa town is also known for its Friday Market, where a range of items like clothes, spices and dried fish are available.
