Sightseeing:

Matheran offers you a great panoramic view from as many as 33 points located here. Some of the favourite points to visit are, Porcupine Point, Echo Point, Panorama Point, Heart Point, Monkey Point (for the monkeys that inhabit the place) and many more where you could catch the most breathtaking views of the sunrise and sunset as well as of the Sahyadri range and its valleys. In fact, the Panorama Point is rightly also called the Sunrise Point to catch that perfect sunrise.

You can also visit the Charlotte Lake and the Panthers Caves. One of the best things that you can do at Matheran, is to take a ride on the toy train, which takes you through the One Kiss Tunnel and very many fascinating little spots. In fact this is your ride from Neral to Matheran and is a great way to start your trip.

Other Activities:

Walking and horseback-riding are the main activities, especially since vehicles aren't allowed here. In addition you could shop at the market, where you get some great bargains on shoes and leather items. And also try the different flavours of chikki, a sweet favourite.

A popular getaway for people from Mumbai and Pune, Matheran is a quiet hill station located on the Sahyadri range, at an altitude of 800 mts. Meaning 'forest on top', Matheran was discovered in 1850, by a district collector of Thane, Hugh Poyntz Malet, and the foundations for its development was laid down by Lord Elphinstone, the then Governor of Mumbai.

Matheran has been listed by the Union Environment Ministry as an eco-sensitive region and is connected to the closest town of Neral by a narrow gauge railway, operating since 1907. As no vehicles are allowed in Matheran, one has to drive up to Dasturi Point, 11kms ahead of Matheran, from where you could reach the main bazaar either by foot or on pony.

 Hotel Cecil?
Hi! I have heard from someone that this Hotel Cecil in Matheran but it has no mention on HIQ, there is no website of the hotel, nor any strong good or bad reviews on other websites. I have been told that the food is good, and the hotel is better than Hotel Regal. I highly doubt this, considering that this hotel doesnt even have its own website, now any photos anywhere on the net nor any reviews. The thing is my wife insists on going ONLY to this hotel. She is expecting and this condition I wouldnt want to risk it...so if anyone has any reviews / pics, that'd be nice...
 Matheran - Good for Honeymoon?
Hello All I am from Chennai and I am planning to celebrate my honeymoon in Matheran only because I heard there is no motor vehicles permitted. This would give me a chance to explore the forest by walk and I may enjoy our privacy. Can someone suggest? I was thinking till this morning about Mahabaleshwar. Which one is the best? Thanks Chandra
