Mayiladuthurai, formerly known as Mayavaram is a city in Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu. It is located on the banks of the river Kaveri in the Thanjavur area. The name of the city originates from a legend which says that due to a curse, Goddess Parvathi was reincarnated as a peacock in Mayuram and worshiped Lord Shiva in his form of Mayuranathar. Mayuram means peacock in Sanskrit and is translated as Mayiladuthurai in the Tamil language.
