Surrounded by low lying
hills, Mirzapur city is located in the district by the same name in Uttar
Pradesh. Originally, it was named Girijapur, the name coined after a legend
when Goddess Parvati (Girija) sacrificed herself in a yagna. Today the town derives its name from Goddess Laxmi, who
emerged from the sea after the mythological Sagar Manthan Mir meaning sea
and za means outcome.Historically, it is
believed that the township was established by Raja Nanner as a commercial township
strategically located on the banks of River Ganga. Naar Ghat carved stone
epigraphs dated to Ashokan period mention the toll taxes related to this city.
The district has been mentioned in the writings of Tieffenthaler during 1760s.Today, Mirzapur holds on
to the legacy of a commercial trading city and the famous brass and carpet
manufacturing units that have placed the city, on the global map. In recent
years, apart from trading and manufacturing, Mirzapur has carved a name for
