Sightseeing Highlights:
What makes Mukteshwar unique is its uninterrupted view of the majestic Himalayan snow peaks unlike anywhere else in the entire Kumaon region. All the prominent peaks can be seen here: Neelkantha named after Lord Shiva, Trishul or the 'trident of the Shiva', Nandaghunti or the 'Veil of the Goddess', Nandadevi, the second highest peak in India, and the five-pronged Panchchuli.
Muketshwar has a small centuries-old Shiva Temple on a hilltop which draws many pilgrims, especially during Shivratri (the festival dedicated to Lord Shiva).
Chauthi Jaali is a gigantic rock cliff jutting out of the hillside. It offers good views of the mountains and the small town of Ramgarh below.
Other Activities:
Trekking is by far the most satisfying way of experiencing Mukteshwar. Surrounded by thick coniferous forests and quaint villages; Mukteshwar offers endless walking opportunities. One can visit the fruit orchards which dot the charming countryside or simply soak in the beauty of the Kumaon Hills. Out of town excursions can be made to Ramgarh, 26 Km away, famous for its fruit orchards.

Mukteshwar sits atop a high ridge in a remote corner of the Kumaon Mountains and is surrounded by fruit orchards and thick coniferous forests. Situated at an altitude of 7,500 ft above sea level, Mukteshwar is most famous for its wonderful 180 degrees view of the snow-capped Himalayas, best seen in autumn and spring. Untouched by popular tourism, this pretty hill retreat demands more than just a day trip. The choice of accommodation is growing here, and you can spend a few days in this secluded place, admiring the views and going for long walks and treks in the forests.
A favourite holiday destination of the British, Mukteshwar has a lot of old colonial bungalows and the famous Veterinary Institute set up by them. The quiet hamlet is also associated with a legend of Shiva who granted immortality or mukti to a demon that he killed at this spot. |
