Munger was earlier known as Monghyr in the British days, and has a rich cultural past. Situated in Munger district in Bihar, the town was famous for the manufacture of iron products like swords and firearms. It was conquered by Mohammad Khilji in 1197, and is mentioned as a place of strategic military importance in the chronicles of that period. During Akbars regime, Monghyr was the seat of power of his general, Todar Mal and later Nawab Mir Quasim shifted the capital from Murshidabad to Munger, to stay away from British control. Surrounded by the Ganges on three sides and Kharagpur hills on the other side, Munger is a nature lovers paradise. Quiet, serene and picturesque, with many religious and historic locations Munger remains a popular travel destination.
