SIGHTSEEING HIGHLIGHTS
The most prominent place to see is the Murudeshwara temple on the Kandura Hill, surrounded by the Arabian Sea on three sides. The temple has a 20-storied Gopuram and two statues of life size elephants guard the entrance.
The world’s tallest statue of Lord Shiva is present inside the temple complex, which is visible from a great distance. This huge statue is 123 feet in height and took 2 years to be sculpted.
Explore the ancient Murudeshwara Fort, said to have been renovated by Tipu Sultan. It is just behind the temple and the views from there are magnificent.

Swimming and water sports can be enjoyed on the beaches, or you may simply relax on the pristine sands. You could also go hiking along the nature trails in the outskirts.
Murudeshwara is a beach town in the Bhatkal taluk of Uttara Kannada. The origin of the name is intertwined in the folklore of India, and is actually another name of Lord Shiva. Situated between Honavar and Bhatkal, Murudeshwara is a picturesque holy place famous for its ancient Murudeshwara temple. It now has the world’s tallest idol of Neelkanta or Lord Shiva towering at 123 feet. |
