Sightseeing Highlights:
Nagaur Fort in the heart of the town is considered the best flat land fort in Rajasthan with a striking façade. Built in 4th century, the fort has three gigantic gates and houses many temples, mosques and beautiful palaces inside. Some of the important palaces are Hadi Rani Mahal with its exquisite mural paintings and Deepak Mahal decorated with impressive floral patterns. Rani Mahal and Akbar Mahal were built during the Mughal era and reflect a blend of Rajputana and Mughal architecture. Among the temples, Krishna Mandir and Ganesh Mandir are fairly well kept. In Krishna Mandir, there are beautiful murals of Lord Krishna and his gopis while the brick-red Ganesh Mandir has a marble idol of Lord Ganesha. Tarkeen Dargah is a popular sacred place for Muslims and Sufis. Other important monuments are the glass Jain Temple and the famous cenotaph of Amar Singh where incense candles are lit up till date.
Other Activities:
Known for its Cattle Fair, Nagaur becomes the centre of attraction during the eight-day festival in January February where cattle trading, camel races, camp fires, folk dances, puppet shows and cock fights add to the festivities of the town. Virtually the entire town participates along with people from nearby states; with around 70,000 animals traded in the traditional style. Besides cattle, wooden items, iron craft, chilli powder and camel leather accessories are sold in the stalls set up by traders.

Nagaur lies midway between the fortress city of Jodhpur and Bikaner in Rajasthan. A beautiful fort and some historic monuments dot the rustic town of Nagaur. Formerly known as Ahichhatrapur, this town was witness to the power struggles between the sultans of Delhi, Gujrat and Marwar. Originally inhabited by the Naga Rajputs, Nagaur changed many hands and was ruled by the Muslim rulers for several years. The town echoes with tales of valour of Amar Singh Rathore who died while fighting against the Mughals. Amar Singh was estranged from his own kingdom of Jodhpur, and Nagaur remembers its adopted hero with much pride. Today, Nagaur is famous for hosting one of the largest cattle fairs in Rajasthan where festivities and colour bring the otherwise sleepy town alive. |
