Sightseeing Highlights:
Ruins of Nalanda University are spread over an area of 14 hectares. Built in the Kushana style of architecture in red bricks, the Nalanda remains exhibit rows of monasteries, hostels and classrooms, although a large part of the university still needs to be excavated. The university library had a huge collection of nine million volumes. Surya Mandir, next to the university is dedicated to the Sun God. Among the various sculptures, there is a huge statue of Goddess Parvati.
Hiuen Tsang Memorial Hall was built in memory of Hiuen Tsang, the Chinese traveller who stayed here for 12 years as a student and a teacher. He had documented detailed and vivid descriptions of the Indian political and social conditions of those times. The fascinating Nalanda Museum is home to a wonderful collection of exquisite bronze sculptures of Pala dynasty dating back from 9th to 10th centuries, copper plates, stone inscriptions, ancient manuscripts and Buddhist statues. Nav Nalanda Vihar was established in 1951 in an effort to keep the tradition of spreading knowledge alive. The institute has been attracting students from several countries who wish to research on Buddhism and Pali literature.

Perhaps the oldest seat of learning in India, Nalanda treasures a glorious past, rich spiritual heritage and some extraordinary architectural ruins. Believed to be established in 5th century BC by the Gupta kings, Nalanda finds vivid mention in the documents of Chinese pilgrims and scholars, particularly Hieun Tsang who studied at the erstwhile university for several years in the 7th century AD. Students from all over the world came to Nalanda for education.
Nalanda derives its name from nalam meaning lotus and da to confer; a lotus symbolises knowledge. Lord Buddha had visited Nalanda several times during his lifetime, and it became a prominent centre of Buddhist learning between 5th -12th century. Equally revered as a Jain pilgrim centre, the founder of Jainism, Lord Mahavira spent a couple of years teaching the principles of Jainism. The first residential international university of the world was unfortunately destroyed by the Muslim invader, Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1205 AD. Together with Bodh Gaya (62 Km) and Patna (90 Km), Nalanda forms an important part of the Buddhist circuit. |
