Sightseeing Highlights

The Ralong Monastery and Namchi Monastery are the most popular pilgrimage and tourist destination. Don’t miss seeing the magnificent 118 ft world’s largest statue of Guru Rinpoche or Padmasambhava on Samdruptse hill, just 8 km from Namchi.

You can also visit the lush green Temi Tea Gardens, the only tea garden of Sikkim which is known to produce exotic tea.

To honour its famous citizen and famous footballer, Baichung Bhutia, Sikkim government has constructed the Baichung Football Stadium in Namchi. There is a helipad at an altitude of 5000 ft from where you can have a paranomic view of the whole Kanchenjunga range, Kalingpong and Darjeeling.

Other activities

In February, the Namchi garden hosts the largest flower show in Sikkim and on display are the rare orchids and other exotic flowers.

Enjoy boating, hiking and trekking in the forests around Namchi.

Namchi which also means ‘Sky High’ in Bhutia, is the capital city of the Southern district in Sikkim at an altitude of 5500 ft. It is about 78 km from Gangtok and 100 km from Siliguri, and lies on the road between Jorethang and Melli. The town has historical relevance and rich cultural heritage reflected in the beautiful, intricately carved wooden monasteries that still have old thangkas, frescos and praying wheels. The latest highlight is the 118 feet statue of Guru Rinpoche, the patron saint of Sikkim built on the Samdruptse hill.

Namchi has always been a Buddhist pilgrimage center but is now developing its potential as a tourist destination. Pleasant climate, breathtaking paranomic views of the snow capped mountains, serene valleys surrounded by green verdant forests have made Namchi hold a special place on the map of tourist destimations in Sikkim. During the summer months, innumerable flowers bloom, while the winter brings snow
