Namchi which also means ?Sky
High? in Bhutia, is the capital city of the Southern district in Sikkim
at an altitude of 5500 ft. It is about 78 km from Gangtok and 100 km from
Siliguri, and lies on the road between Jorethang and Melli. The town has
historical relevance and rich cultural heritage reflected in the beautiful,
intricately carved wooden monasteries that still have old thangkas, frescos and
praying wheels. The latest highlight is the 118 feet statue of Guru Rinpoche,
the patron saint of Sikkim
built on the Samdruptse hill.
