New Delhi, the national capital of India, is one of the nine districts of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. It is the seat of the Government of India. With an area of 47.2 sq km, it is one of the fastest growing cities in the world and was recently rated as a Beta World City. It is bound by the states of Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Being under the rule of several rulers and dynasties, the city has a rich historical and cultural background. Muhammad of Ghori captured the city in 1192 who was overthrown by Timur in 1398. The first battle of Panipat in 1526 saw the handover of Delhi from the Lodhis to the Mughals, when Babur established the Mughal Empire. The city then came under the British rule in 1803. Later, Delhi became the capital of the British who shifted to the city from Calcutta in 1911, and finally the capital city of modern India in 1947.
Delhi has two parts: the old and the new. While Old Delhi is all about alleys, bylanes, Mughal and British architectural structures, New Delhi is home to several offices and modern buildings. Some of the major attractions of the city include the Red Fort, India Gate, Qutub Minar, Jantar Mantar, etc. Other sightseeing options include the Raj Bhavan, Akshardham Temple, Lotus Temple, Parliament, Raj Ghat as well as several museums. Chandni Chowk, Karolbagh and Connaught Place have emerged as the most sough-after shopping hubs.
Another significant facet of New Delhi is its bazaars and its food. Tourists can walk in the bylanes of Chandni Chowk and savour some local delicacies like chaats and jalebis or just walk up to street markets like Janpath, Sarojini Nagar, Khan Market or Lajpat Nagar to shop for clothes, chappals, bags and other accessories. Haggling in these markets is a must. The Dilli Haat where craft fairs are also held is another must-visit shopping destination in Delhi.
The best way to get around Delhi is either by auto rickshaws or the metro which connects major parts of the city. Tourists can opt for cycle rickshaws when exploring the quaint old bylanes of Old Delhi.
Delhi is a culturally rich city and celebrates religious and cultural festivals with great gusto. One such event is the Holla Mohalla organised by the Punjabi residents of Delhi, dedicated to Sikh martyrs.
New Delhi can be reached very easily by air, rail and road. The city’s airport, Indira Gandhi International Airport, serves both domestic and international flights. It is connected to most of the cities within the country and also has direct connections to several international destinations including New York, London, Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore, etc.
New Delhi is also well connected by trains. New Delhi Railway Station (NLDS) is the main rail station of Delhi. Other major stations are Old Delhi Railway Station and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station. New Delhi is also reachable by road from nearby cities and regions with bus services being provided by the Delhi Transport Corporation and several private operators. There are three main bus terminals – Inter State Bus Terminus, Sarai Kale-Khan Bus Terminus and Anand Vihar Bus Terminus.
New Delhi has extreme climatic conditions. Summers, with temperatures often going above 45° Celsius, can be very hot. Winters, on the other hand, are chilly and foggy. However, the best time to visit New Delhi is from October to March as this time is ideal for sightseeing activities and outings.

New Delhi, the capital city of India is among the famous tourist spots, which has numerous monuments, archaeological structures, amusement parks and many other important attractions. Some of the major tourist attractions in the city include Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple, Red Fort, Diwan-i-Khas, Mumtaz Mahal, Hayat Bakhsh Bagh, Purana Qila and Jama Masjid.
Red Fort is an important heritage site in Delhi, which has Diwan-i-Khas, Diwan-i-Aam, Lahore Gate, Mumtaz Mahal and Hayat Bakhsh Bagh. This ancient building was constructed by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan using red sandstone. It is also the site, where the Indian Prime Minister hoists the national flag and addresses the public on the Independence Day of India, 15th August.
Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple is situated near the site of Commonwealth Games Village, which attracts number of travellers for its beautiful architecture and cultural events. It covers a large area and is known for boat ride, musical fountains, gardens, temples and others. Gurdwara Majnu Ka Tilla is situated in North Delhi and holds historical importance, as the Sikh religious leader Guru Nanak visited this place.
Purana Qila or the Old Fort is famous for its light and sound show which is conducted every evening. The International Trade Fair Exhibition Centre is located near the Old Fort, which is the site for organising the annual India International Trade Fair or IITF. Raj Ghat is the cenotaph which was built to honour Mahatma Gandhi.
Tourists can also visit varied places like Lakshmi Narayan Temple or Birla Mandir, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib, Parliament House, India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan and Rajpath. Other main sightseeing attractions are Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb, Lotus Temple, ISKCON Temple, Jantar Mantar, National Museum and International Dolls Museum.
Travellers can also visit various locations such as Qila Rai Pithora, National Zoological Park, National Railway Museum, Fatehpuri Mosque, Teen Murti Bhavan, Lodhi Garden and Safdarjung's Tomb. Delhi also has famous sites like Nizamuddin's Shrine, Nehru Park, India Habitat Centre, National Museum, Sai Baba Temple, Tibet House, Dilli Haat, Fun N Food Village and Chattarpur Mandir.
Surajkund Crafts Mela, Garden of Five Senses, Tughlaqabad Fort and Hauz Khas Complex are located in South Delhi. Besides, travellers visiting New Delhi can also make a visit to Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Noida and Gurgaon that are part of the National Capital Region (NCR).
