Nilambur can be most aptly described as a palace of God considering that the state of Kerala
goes by the catch phrase, God's own Country Nilambur's pristine beauty is
prominent with vast rainforests, clean rivers and waterfalls around the town.
The town is located in the Malapurram district of Kerala,
along the banks of the Chaliyar
River. The Nilgiris range of the Western Ghats(a mountain range) are
in close proximity to the town which is also famous for being home to the
oldest teak wood plantations in the world called Connolly's Plot and is also
noted for the tribal settlements in the region. This teak plantation was first
raised in the 1840s in order to ensure a constant supply of timber to the
British (India was a British colony between the mid 1800s until 1947). Nilambur
lays stake to the claim of having the tallest teak (Kannimara
Teak) tree in the world.
The town is famous for the Kovilakoms (residences of the
local rulers of the past), which are architectural marvels known for their
beautiful frescoes and grand artworks in wood. A teak museum established by the
Kerala Forest Research Institute owing to the historical significance of teak
to this particular region is a must visit for nature enthusiasts and tourists
alike.
