Omkareshwar
is a small island town in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh with its own nagar panchayat. It is 72kms far away
from Khandwa. It is 72 km. away from Khandwa and is strategically located at
the confluence of the two main rivers Narmada
and Kauveri. The island is also known as Mandhata Omkareshwar or Shivapuri. It
is one of the holiest of the Hindu pilgrimage places with the temple of Omkara,
the presiding deity who is worshipped there.The island
derives its name from the shape of the Holiest Hindu symbol 'Om'
with two soaring mountains separated by a steep valley. It is considered to be
one of the places among the 12 Jyotirlingas and holds a special significance
for the Shiv Bhakts.On the southern
and the eastern side of the island are soaring, 150 meters high cliffs that
make the perfect backdrop to the architectural charm of the temples.Omkareshwar
is known due to the famous Shri Omkar Mandhata and the Amareshwar temples.
