Sightseeing Highlights:
Priyadarshini Point is a popular spot where Captain Forsyth first glimpsed at the awesome beauty of Pachmarhi. The three major peaks of the Satpura Range, Chauradeo, Mahadeo and Dhoopgarh are visible from this point. The cave shelters of Mahadeo Hills display rock paintings dating back to 10,000 years, besides an ancient Lord Shiva shrine which sees the majority of its visitors during Shivratri. Pandav Caves are carved out of a low hillock and believed to be the shelter for the five Pandav brothers during their exile. These caves are now protected monuments. Next to these caves is Apsara Vihar or the Fairy Pool. Shallow enough for swimming and bathing, the pool is formed by a 30-feet waterfall. Other falls worth visiting are the Big Falls and the Duchess Falls.
Bison Lodge is the oldest house in Pachmarhi, built in 1862. It has been converted into a museum which showcases the region's rich flora and fauna. Christ Church with Belgian stained-glass windows is a famous landmark in the town.
Satpura National Park established in 1981 is home to a rich variety of wildlife. Spread over 524 sq. Km, the park has tigers; deer, leopards, bison, and several migratory and resident birds.
Other Activities:
Pachmarhi is a trekker's paradise. Walks can be done on the known routes or the lesser know trails which reach the Mahadeo hills. A walk to Dhoopgarh, the highest point in Satpura is quite popular; it offers amazing views of the sunset and the changing hues of the sandstone hills. Other rewarding walking paths include the one circling Astachal, meeting at the caves of Reechgarh. Swimming and bathing is possible at most of the waterfalls in Pachmarhi.

Secluded in a saucer-shaped plateau and flanked by red sandstone hills, Pachmarhi is known as the Queen of Satpuras. Occupying the highest point in Madhya Pradesh, it is an offbeat hilly retreat with pristine wilderness and more or less untouched terrains. Deep gorges, dense forests, streams, cascading waterfalls and groves of sal and bamboo add to Pachmarhi's natural beauty. It was the capital of the erstwhile Central Provinces and till today, a part of the town is an army cantonment. Discovered by a British Captain in 1857, Pachmarhi also has nostalgic remains of colonial architecture. The Stone Age paintings in the cave shelters of Mahadeo Hills are another attraction here. The area is also a pilgrim centre with shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva hidden in deep ravines and cliffs. |
