| About Palamau Tourism |
Palamau is located in the Daltonganj district of Bihar, about 165 km from Ranchi. Situated on the Koel River, the district is named after late Colonel Dalton, Commissioner of Chhotanagpur in 1861. It was once the seat of power during the reign of the Chero kings and remnants of historical structures are still present here. It is believed that the local tribes of Kharwars, Oraons and Cheros can trace their origins to the days of the Ramayana when they ruled over these areas. Palamau is well known for wildlife, forests and rich deposits of minerals. Due to its rich bio-diversity, in 1960, the Palamau Sanctuary was formed under Project Tiger. The Sanctuary is famous for tigers, wild cats, diverse species of deer, and other small animals. The natural unexplored beauty of Palamau has attracted tourists and nature lovers over the years.
