| Palamau Tiger Reserve |
|
|
|
The Palamau Tiger Reserve, with an area of 1026
sq. km., is one of the first 9 tiger reserves under India's acclaimed Project Tiger. It
was established in 1974 and includes the Betla National Park
(226 sq km) which forms the core area of the reserve, and the Palamau Sanctuary
(980 sq km).
The sanctuary's terrain is largely a cover of
sal forests and bamboo thickets. Though it is fed by the Koel River
and its tributaries, the animals are mostly dependant on man-made water holes
for their needs and thus animal sightings are plentiful here in comparison to
other parks.
The main attractions of Palamau are the tiger,
elephant, gaur, leopard, wild dog, muntjac, nilgai, Indian wolf and sambar.
The Palamau area played a vital role during the
1857 War of Independence. As a result there are ruins of two ancient forts
built by the Chero kings within the tiger reserve.
