Walking
into Pangkot is like stepping into a fairytale village. Tucked away within the
Kumaon hills, with magical forests echoing the songs of hundreds of colourful
birds and little trails that disappear into sunlit glades, that's Pangot for
you. A birdwatcher's paradise, Pangot is 15 kms from Nainital and the drive is
through the bird habitats of Cheena
Peak range forests via
Snow View Point and Kilbury. Some of the commonly encountered birds here are
the lammergeier, Himalayan griffon, blue-winged minla, spotted &
slaty-backed forktail, rufous-bellied woodpecker, rufous-bellied niltava,
khalij pheasant, variety of thrushes etc. Almost 150 bird species have been
recorded at Pangot and its surrounding areas. Life in Pangot is so quiet and
unhurried that the most exciting activity is a trip to the small, quaint
village market. The tea-stalls where villagers meet up is a good place to catch
up with local life and spend hours doing nothing but being an observer of 'life
passing by'.
