Animal Sightings:
Panna National Park is known for mainly for its tigers, other species found here are the nilgai, chowsingha, Indian antelope or chinkara, sambar, caracal, wild dog, sloth bear, chital, wild boar, wolf and leopards. The avian population comprises of a host of migratory birds, white-necked stork, bar-headed goose, vulture, cuckoos, paradise flycatcher, babbler, kites, eagles and blossom-headed parakeet among others. Ken Gharial Sanctuary on River Ken is yet another attraction, with its six-metre long fish-eating gharials.
Other Highlights:
Panna has a quite a number of scenic waterfalls. Pandav Falls and Raneh Falls are worth visiting. Just 57 Km from Panna is Khajuraho, renowned for its historic temples and sculptures.
Activities:
The best way to see the wildlife in Panna is by elephant safari. Elephants can actually go deep into the forests and offer an exciting experience. Jeeps are not provided by the forest authority, so you need to get the jeeps on rent. Yet another option is the hour-long boat ride offered by the park authorities whereby you can see some of the aquatic wildlife from close quarters.

Panna National Park is home to some of the best wildlife species in India. It is close to the world heritage site of Khajuraho, which you could also include in your itinerary. Spread over 543 sq Km of rugged landscape, scrubby vegetation, gorges, forest patches and plateaus, Panna is one of India's best tiger reserves. The Ken River which flows through the park is the main source of water for the wildlife, and breaks into breathtaking waterfalls. More than 20 species of mammals and 230 bird species inhabit Panna National Park. Besides wildlife, the small town of Panna is also famous for its diamond industry. |
