Sightseeing Highlights
Among important places of worship in the city are the old temples of Mandir Aashapurni and Lakshmi Narayan Mandir. You can visit the beautiful British church on Mission Road and the Sikh Gurudwara. There is also an ancient mosque right in the middle of the city.
Visit India's most important hydraulic research station at Malikpur, 7 km from Pathankot. Here you can see various models of dams and irrigation systems before they are actually commissioned.
The Ranjit Sagar Dam is the biggest gravity dam in Asia and the Punjab government has plans to develop the surrounding area into a major tourist spot. Five kilometers away in the village of Doong, there are some caves believed to have sheltered the Pandavas of the Mahabharatas, while on exile. Shahpur Kandi is known for its hanging rest house, which is one of its kind and worth a visit.
There is an ancient Shiva temple called Kathgarg approximately 25 km from Pathankot. Another heritage spot is the Nurpur Fort, also 25 km from Pathankot. This fort has a Brij Raj or Krishna temple. Nurpur is also famous for its Pashmina shawls and other woolen textiles.
Other Activities
This city is famous for Litchis - you can eat the fruit fresh in season, or ask for litchi-based products. In apple season, you can buy crates of Himachali apples at reasonable prices. Eat the famous Palang-tod mithai, basically a milk cake, at 'Banarsi Di Hatti', which is a more than 70 years tradition.
Pathankot is at the meeting point of three states, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, making it an important gateway to many North Indian holiday destinations. Over the years, Pathankot has emerged as one of the leading commercial hubs of Punjab; feeding major hydro-electric projects in the country like the Ranjit Sagar Dam. Due to its ideal location, Pathankot serves as a base for the defence forces - Indian Army and Indian Air Force. Mamoon Cantonment which is Asia s largest military station is located in Pathankot. Situated in the picturesque foothills of Kangra, with the river Chakki flowing close by, the city provides access to Amritsar, Shimla, Dalhousie, Dharamsala, Kangra Valley and Jwalaji. Pathankot has also been the seat of the loi and shawl weaving industry for centuries and was on the important trade route to Central Asia.
