Sightseeing highlights
One of the
most popular places to visit is the Pemayangtse Monastery built in 1705 as the center of
Nyingamapa sect. The traditional, colorful frescos depicting Buddhist scenes
and a seven tier, intricately sculpted wooden depiction of Heaven are the focus
of attention.
The Sangacholing
Monastery was built in 1697 by
Lhatsum Chempo and is one of the largest monasteries with 17th
century clay figurines dedicated to the Nyingmapa sect.
You can
also visit the ancient ruins of
Rabdentse palace, close to the Pemayangtse Monastery. These ruins are preserved by the Archeological
Survey of India. From the ruins, you can also view the breathtaking Mt. Kanchenjunga
and the valley.
Other activities
A visit to the Khecheopalri Lake
is a must. Sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus, it is popularly known as the wish fulfillment lake. Located in a picturesque location, the lake is
surrounded by thick forests in the backdrop of high mountains. For some great
views of the snow capped, majestic mountains, visit Pelling
which is just 3 km away. It is the perfect place to enjoy trekking, hiking and
mountaineering. |
