Pemayangtse
is located in the Western district of Sikkim and is one of the major Buddhist
pilgrimage centers. It is located 125 km from Gangtok and 6 km from Geyzing, the head quarter of the district. The rich historical significance merges with a
traditional culture in Pemayangtse as it was the stronghold of the Nyingamapa
sect much influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. In that era, the kingdom of Sikkim
comprised parts of Bhutan, Nepal, and Tibet
and covered the Himalayan foothills, including Darjeeling

One of the
most popular places to visit is the Pemayangtse Monastery built in 1705 as the center of
Nyingamapa sect. The traditional, colorful frescos depicting Buddhist scenes
and a seven tier, intricately sculpted wooden depiction of Heaven are the focus
of attention.
