Sightseeing Highlights

Two of the must-see attractions here are the Shiva temple of Shri Manguesh at Priol-Ponda, 5 km northwest of Ponda and the Shri Mahalsa Vishnu temple. They are small 18th century temples built on the hilltop and are popular with the locals and tourists.

Another popular place is the Shri Shantadurga temple which is 1 km southwest. Dedicated to the goddess of peace, Shantadurga has an unusual, almost pagoda like structure with a stone slab roof. Mahalaxmi temple is another shrine that is dedicated to Goddess Laxmi who is also a patron diety of the local people.

Other Activities

One can make a day trip to the neighboring spice plantations and have an authentic experience along with shopping for spices especially vanilla that is famous here. Many plantations also organize a typical Konkani meal for tourists.

Some of the other activities include taking trips into the Bondla wildlife sanctuary and Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary nearby, which are known for their flora and fauna. The Mahaveer sanctuary is the biggest of all sanctuaries in Goa and is home to leopards, spotted deer, jungle cats, and giant squirrels among others. This trip can also be combined with a visit to the Dudhsagar waterfalls that are a perennial favorite with tourists and locals.

Ponda is located in central Goa and about 29 kms southeast of Panaji. Most of the areas of Ponda were originally part of the Quela Village. It is a busy inland town that is of little interest to most travelers, but there are a number of unique Hindu temples in the surrounding area, and several spice plantations that make for an interesting day of sightseeing. Most of these Hindu temples were rebuilt from originals that were destroyed by the Portuguese in the 18th century and their lamp towers represent a distinctive Goan feature. Ponda is one of the few areas of Goa with a predominantly Hindu culture and population.
