About Porbandar Tourism

                     
Porbandar is a coastal city situated in the Indian state of Gujarat and is popular worldwide as the birthplace of the legendary Mahatma Gandhi. It is also the administrative centre of Porbandar District.

Porbandar is rich in cultural heritage and celebrates numerous festivals and fairs throughout the year like Navaratri, Holi and many other traditional Hindu festivals. Out of these, Navaratri is the most enthusiastically celebrated festival in the area that lasts for around 10 days. The main language used by the people of Porbandar is Gujarati.

The history of this city is also associated with some legendary and popular names like Mahatma Gandhi, Savitaben Nanji Kalidas, Gulabdas, Sri Nanjibhai Kalidas Mehta, Sri Narottam Morarji, Sri Manekbhai Bhatia, and Sardar Vallabhai Patel. The city is also rich in educational institutions out of which the most prominent ones are the Sandipani Vidhyaniketan, Arya Kanya Gurukul and the Maharshi Dayanand Science College.

The city of Porbandar had also witnessed the Harappan Settlement between the 16th  and 14th century B.C. and is also the birthplace of Sudama who was the friend of Lord Krishna. It was also a part of the princely states during the British rule. Porbandar was also an active centre of maritime activities in the past, due to the discovery of ancient jetties along the Porbandar creek.

The city also comprises many historic temples like the Kirti Mandir, Sudama Mandir, Bharat Mandir, Gita Mandir, Gayatri Mandir, Ram Dhoon Mandir and many others. There are also many other tourist attractions in the place like Sandipani Vidyaniketan, Bird Sanctuary, Rana Bapu’s Mahal, Chowpati, Kamla Nehru park, Nehru Planetarium, etc.

Porbandar is also easy to access as it is well connected with other states by road, railway, as well as airlines. The road to the city is connected through National Highway 8B and National Highway 8E Ext. The Porbandar Railway Station also connects the city with major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmadabad, and others. There are also regular flights between Mumbai and Porbandar from the Porbandar Airport.

Porbandar experiences a temperate climate, which neither gets the city too heated in summers and the winters are also quite pleasant here. However, monsoon is quite unpredictable in the place. Porbandar experiences a large tourist turnover every year between the months of October and February.

Tourist places in Porbandar

The main attractions of Porbandar include temples, parks, forests, wild life sanctuary, beaches, etc. One of the famous sites of this place is Barda hills. Barda hills is famous for its forest, wild life sanctuary and trekking spots. Barda Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Barda hills and is sprawling over an area of 192.31 square km. Another popular attraction of this place is Darbargadh, which is a fortified palace built by Rana Sartanji.

Sartanji Choro is another monument of this place, which is famous for its architecture.  Sartanji Choro, which is a three storey summer pavilion, built in  Rajput style of architecture by Rana Sartanji.

Kirti Mandir, also referred as the ‘Temple of Fame’ was built by Maharaja Sayaji Rao III in 1936 AD. The temple is adjacent to the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. At Marin drive, Huzoor Palace is the main attraction, which is famous for its European style of architecture and was built by Natwar Shah. Besides, Porbandar is dotted with several temples. Sri Hari Mandir, also known as Sandipani Vidyaniketan was established in 1992 on a land area of 85 acres. This monument has a length of 105 feet and its entire complex comprises a total of 66 pillars.

The Khimeshwar, an ancient temple is located at a distance of 15 km from Porbandar. It is believed that the temple is built by Pandavas. Krishna-Sudama Temple is dedicated to Sudama, childhood friend and devotee of Lord Krishna.

Porbandar Bird Sanctuary is the smallest bird sanctuary and spans in an area of 1 square km. The sanctuary has a lake attracting migratory birds. The sanctuary is located close to the Huzoor Palace, where there is monument called Daria Rajmahal, which was constructed by Maharaja Bhavsinhji.

The Tara Mandir is one of the earliest planetariums in India. Bharat Mandir is a popular temple, which is dedicated to the country ‘Bharat’. The temple is located opposite to Nehru Planetarium or Tara Mandir.

Chowpaty Beach located near ST bus station, is at a distance of ½ km from the centre of the town. Bileshwar Shiva Temple is an ancient temple located at a distance of 15 km from Porbandar.

Other attractions of this place include Kamla Nehru Park, Satyanarayan temple, Gayatri Mandir, Bhutnath Mahadev temple, Jadeshwar temple, Ramdhun Nagina Masjid, Rehmani Masjid, Jumma Masjid, Mitthi Masjid, Khari Masjid, Sunni Vora Masjid, Takia Masjid, Roman Catholic Church, C. N. I Protestant Church, Rana Bapu's Mahal and Vishwakarma Prabhuji Mandir Temple.

Rani Baug Park, Bhutnath Mahadev Temple, Jadeshwar Temple, Ramdhun Temple, Sunni Vora Masjid Temple, Porbandar Beach, Gita Mandir, Ram Krishna Mission, Swaminarayan Mandir, Chadeshwar Mahadev, Ajani Mataji's Temple, Vivekananda Memorial, Sai Baba’s Mandir, Shri Khimeshwar Temple, Khambhala Dam, Shri Trikamachraya Temple, Rangbai Sea Shore, Anchherital and Jolingkong lakes, and Nav Grah Mandir are the other popular attractions of the region.
