According to a firsthand Report of the
Archeological Survey, Bengal
Circle conducted in 1903-1904, the two forts found
in the Palamau Reserve are known as Purana Kila and Naya Kila.
While both forts were built around the beginning
of the Mughal period, the older fort of the two, Purana Kila is of regular
shape, about one mile in circumference. It stands on terraced grounds, with a
cross wall dividing the higher part from the lower one.
The walls are of varying thickness, in some
places measuring about 8'and 5'- 6'. The fort has four strongly fortified
gates with watch towers. Inside the fort are the remains of four two-storied
houses and a mosque with three domes. The houses are plastered over and remains
of paintings and stucco ornamentation are seen here and there.
