Sightseeing Highlights:
Home to over 500 temples of all sizes, Puskhar is revered for its spiritual significance. Brahma Temple is the main attraction here, Pushkar being the only place in the world where Lord Brahma is worshipped. The hilltop temple has a red spire with a symbol of hans or swan at the entrance. The one-hour trek uphill offers good views of the lake.
Savitri Temple located behind the Brahma Temple is dedicated to Goddess Savitri, the wife of Lord Brahma. There are 52 ghats on the main lake, set according to the lunar calendar, and each ghat is believed to have different healing properties. Just 14 Km from Puskhar lies Ajmer, famous for its Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, equally revered by Muslims and Hindus.
Other Activities:
A holy dip in the sacred Pushkar Lake is a must to experience the essence of this pilgrimage site. Pushkar town is lined with a labyrinth of bazaars where everything from late 60s time warp clothing to embroidered fabrics are available. The items sold here include silver and beaded jewellery; lac bangles; camel covers; traditional puppets; shoulder bags; wall hangings, brass ware, woollen blankets and colourful cushion covers. There are several second hand bookshops in the main bazaar where old classics are sold at discounted rates. The town is dotted with a number of rooftop and garden restaurants where local mouth-watering delicacies can be savoured.
Pushkar Fair is a cattle and camel trading meet held during October and November. A host of festivities from folk dances to camel and donkey races, besides shopping and eating mark the occasion. The holy town of Puskhar in Rajasthan is on the shores of Pushkar Lake. It is considered one of the five dhams, others being Badrinath, Puri, Rameswaram and Dwarka and is held in high esteem by Hindu devotees. Pushkar means a pond created from flowers. According to the popular legend, Lord Brahma released a swan with a lotus in its beak and let it fall on earth. The point where the lotus would fall was supposed to be the site for a grand yagna or holy sacrifice, and thus Puskhar came into being. Dotted with temples and ghats around the lake, Pushkar has become a major tourist destination with visitors from all corners of the world flocking here, especially during the famous Camel Fair held every year in the months of October and November. |
