Raichur 584 101Situated on the
banks of the Tungabhadra
River in the eastern part
of Karnataka, Raichur is famous for its imposing Raichur Fort. It has acquired
a rich history over the centuries, having been a part of various empires, such
the Mauryas, Chalukyas, Bahmanis, Vijayanagara and the Mughal kings. Having
thus imbibed the culture of so many dynasties, it has become a cultural
kaleidoscope of India.
It is often historically alluded to as Doab (meaning two rivers in Hindi),
given the proximity of the Krishna & Tungabhadra rivers.
The city Raichur
dates back to 1294 AD, when the fort was constructed by the Kakatiya rulers
stone inscriptions found here corroborate the veracity of this fact. In
addition, a repository of age-old relics and artefacts bear testimony to its
historical legacy. Among the ruins of the immense fort are many tanks and old
temples.
Today, Raichur is
an important commercial, industrial and educational centre besides being the
headquarters of Raichur district. Famous for its produce of rice, oilseeds and
cotton, the place is a commercial centre on the Central Railway. It is around
409 Km from Bangalore
and an important station on the Guntakal-Mumbai railway line.
