Sightseeing Highlights:
Rajahmundry is one of the main Hindu piligrimages with important temples such as the Markandeya and Kotilingeswara temples on the bank of the Godavari. A modern temple here is the ISKCON temple, also on the banks of the Godavari. The surrounding area known as Gowthami Ghat, draws a lot of tourists for its recreational activities.
A must-see for tourists is Asia?s largest rail and road bridge over the Godavari, supported by 56 pillars, which offers a great view.
You can also visit the Rallabandi Subba Rao museum which has an interesting collection of coins, sculpture, pottery and palm-leaf manuscripts.
A popular outdoors spot is Papi Hills which has a spectacular waterfalls near the village called Perantala Palli. Another spot known for its natural beauty is Pattiseema, which is also a hotspot for film shootings.
Other Activities:
Rajahmundry is also known for the Pushkaram or bathing ritual that happens once every two years and for which thousands of pilgrims come here. Shopping includes carpets and sandalwood objects, which are famous here.
Located on the left bank of River Godavari in East Godavari district, Rajahmundry has an old history. Its ancient name was Raja Mahendri and it was built as a capital city by the Chalukya Kings in the 11th century. Today it has several ruins of palaces and fort walls. New archeological excavations even suggest that the city may have been in existence far before the Chalukyas. It is also the birthplace of Nannayya, the poet laureate or 'Adi Kavi' (first poet) of Telugu. |
