Located on the left bank of River Godavari in East Godavari district, Rajahmundry has an old history. Its ancient name was Raja Mahendri and it was built as a capital city by the Chalukya Kings in the 11th
century. Today it has several ruins of palaces and fort walls. New
archeological excavations even suggest that the city may have been in
