Earlier known as 'Rajagiri' it was home for a considerable time to Lord Buddha and Mahavir. Mahavir is known to have spent nearly 14 years in Rajgir, while Buddha has been known to deliver most of his famous sermons here. The first Buddhist Council was held in the cave of Saptapami in the surrounding hills.
Rajgir is also famous as the place where the Magadha ruler, King Bimbisara converted to Buddhism. In legends, Rajgir has also been linked to happenings during the time of Mahabharata.
