Sightseeing Highlights

Jivakas Mango Garden is the site of the royal dispensary of Jivaka, the royal physician to whom Buddha was once brought to get his wounds dressed in the time of King Bimbisara.

Monastery Venuvana Vihara was constructed on the orders of King Bimbisara for Lord Buddha to reside in and is considered his first offering to the Lord as a disciple.

You can explore King Ajatashatru's Fort, built in the 6th century AD and see the Stupa which was built by him during his reign.

An ancient 40 km wall was known to encircle the city and was built of fitted stones. The remnants of this magnificent pre-Mauryan structure are worth seeing.

The place where Lord Buddha preached to his disciples is known as Griddhakuta (Vulture's Peak). To commemorate this holy site, the Buddhist Mission in Japan helped construct the Peace Pagoda or Shanti Stupa. You go on the aerial lift to this pagoda, and also enjoy seeing Rajgir city at a height.

Other Activities

Trek and explore the caves in the surrounding hills. You can even take a dip in the hot water springs here, as they are known to have curative properties.

Ramble through the ancient ruins and see the places influenced by Mahavir and Buddha eons ago.

Nestled in the hills that stand as mute testimony of the teachings of Mahavir and Buddha, Rajgir is located 10 km from Nalanda. Earlier known as 'Rajagiri' it was home for a considerable time to Lord Buddha and Mahavir. Mahavir is known to have spent nearly 14 years in Rajgir, while Buddha has been known to deliver most of his famous sermons here. The first Buddhist Council was held in the cave of Saptapami in the surrounding hills.

Rajgir is also famous as the place where the Magadha ruler, King Bimbisara converted to Buddhism. In legends, Rajgir has also been linked to happenings during the time of Mahabharata. Rajgir today, is a small town with remnants of an ancient kingdom and beautiful temples. The serene and picturesque location makes it an ideal holiday destination.
