About Salcette Tourism
Salcette is a cluster of 66 islands in South Goa
district, with Madgao as its main urban centre. It is also known as
'Shasti' spelt by the Goans as Saxtty. Having been ruled by Hindu,
Muslim, and Portuguese rulers over the centuries, the area has many
monuments and relics that are a reminder of this rich heritage. There
was a famous Vishnu temple in this area that drew pilgrims from all
over; however it was destroyed by Muslim invaders. When the Portuguese
took over Salcette, they built many churches here, some of which are tourism highlights of today. There is a range of accommodation options in Salcette,
from the very posh luxury resorts, to mid-and budget hotels. Two of the
five star hotels here have casinos, adding to the excitement of
nightlife here.
Sightseeing Highlights:
Rachol Fort
is about 7 km from Madgaon, and has a Seminary alongside it on top of
the hill-side. The views from here are stupendous. The fort has an
ancient history, with Vijaynagar and Bahmani Kings fighting for its
control, and later the Portuguese taking it over
