Sawai Madhopur Tourism

The walled city of Sawai Madhopur is situated in Rajasthan and is essentially the base for visiting the renowned Ranthambore National Park. Laid out on the lines of a planned city, it was built by Sawai Madho Singh I, the Maharaja of Jaipur, during the late 18^th century and is named after him. The city has a tumultuous past, with many battles fought here, and has been passed from one ruling dynasty to another. Each ruler, from the Mughal emperors to the Rajput kings, contributed to the beautification of the city, building temples and a fort here. Finally, in 1754, Mughal Emperor Shah Alam presented Sawai Madhopur to Sawai Madho Singh as a gift, and the city was henceforth maintained as a hunting reserve for the royal family.
