SIGHTSEEING HIGHLIGHTS
In the city of Shimoga is the Shivappanaika Palace Museum, which is a must see. The beautiful palace made entirely of rosewood is an architectural marvel and has an amazing collection of antiquities of the Keladi period.
Within the city limits is the Sacred Heart Church, which is the 2nd largest Church in India, with a capacity for 5000 people.
On further excursions, you can visit Koodali where the two rivers - Tunga and Bhadra meet and the fast flowing Tungabhadra River originates. Koodali is also a historical religious center, famous for numerous temples.
Gajanur 10 km from Shimoga is popular for the dam across river Tunga and also has an elephant training camp.
Nature lovers should not miss the Bird Sanctuary on the banks of the river Tunga in Mandagadde, 32 km from Shimoga. A variety of birds like ducks, cormorant, snake bird, cranes and other migratory birds can be seen here.
A popular destination is the Tiger and Lion Safari at Tavarekopoa, just 10 km. from Shimoga on NH 206.
