About Silchar Tourism
About
Silchar Silchar is the headquarters of Cachar district in Assam, situated by the banks of the BarakRiver
in what is popularly known as BarakValley. The town is
surrounded by the Barail Hills on the north, Mizo Hills on the south, Manipur
on the East and Bangladesh
on the West. Being a peaceful place in the North-East earned it the name of
"Island of Peace" from the late Prime Minister
Indira Gandhi. The majority of natives in Silchar are Sylhethi, earlier a part
of erstwhile Sylhet district of undivided India. A sizeable fraction of the
locals also consist of people originally living here from before the partition
of Bengal. Silchar is also the gateway to the
state of Mizoram and part of Manipur. Since it enjoys significant commercial
importance, it has witnessed the settlement of a sizeable population of traders
from distant parts of India.
