Sightseeing Highlights

The most interesting thing to see here is the Tribal cultural museum where the ethnic tribal culture and heritage of Silvassa is preserved. It offers a fascinating insight into the lifestyle and history of the people and the place.

Another must see is the Vanganga Lake and Island Garden, which are popular with tourists and offer paddleboat facilities along with many other attractions for adults and children.

Among the religious attractions here is the historic Bindrabin temple dedicated to Lord Shiva locally known as Tadkeshwara. It is situated on the bank of the river Sakartod. Also visit the Church of Our Lady of Piety, which is one of the oldest churches in the country.

Besides these attractions, there are many other ruins of palaces and forts dotting the countryside that can make your vacation truly interesting.

Other Activities

You can visit the Vandhara Udyan which is a riverside park with carefully designed gardens. It is an ideal place for picnics. Khanvel, which is 25 km from Silvassa also has many tourist attractions on offer. Shopping articles include the hand made smoking pipes made by the tribals and the famous Warli paintings, among other souvenirs.

Located about 180 km from Mumbai and 120 km from Surat, Silvassa is the capital town of Dadra & Nagar Haveli. It gets its name from a Portuguese word, silva, meaning wood, which stands for the tall trees that surround this town. Silvassa was under Portuguese rule in India and is also known for its vibrant tribal population.

Tribes constitute 80 per cent of the total population here and the region is known for its quiet charm and is a living evidence of tribal history with many myths, songs, legends and folklore. Thus apart from sanctuaries, gardens, lakes and rivers, this region is rich with history and culture as well. Silvassa is considered to be the home of Warli culture.

The language spoken by the Warli people is basically a mixture of Marathi and Gujarati with a local twist.
