Located in the state of Gujarat, on the Arabian Sea, Somnath is one of the holiest pilgrimage spots for Hindus and home to one of the 12 Jyotirlings or religious Shiva shrines of India. It has had a long and eventful history and been built and destroyed a number of times down the centuries. Somnath had always been the target of invaders in search of its fabulous treasures and richness. The ancient inscriptions and carvings found here reveal that the place was initially inhabited by the Aryans. Somnath is also known by several other names including Deo Pattan, Prabhas Pattan or Pattan Somnath.
