Sightseeing Highlights:
The famous Bhramarambha Mallikarjunaswamy Temple located on a 457-meter high hill has Sri Mallikarjunaswamy as the presiding deity, and is one of the 12 'Jyotirlingams'.
Pilgrimages also include the sacred shrines of Uma-Maheshwara and Saraswati.
A visit to the 512 m long Srisailam Dam on the River Krishna, offers magnificent views of the ghats, cliffs and forests.
A must see also includes the Nagarjunsagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve 356,000 hectares large and sprawling over five districts of central Andhra Pradesh. It is surrounded by the Nallamalai Hills on the southern and eastern side while the Krishna River forms the boundary on the other side.
Animals to be sighted are bonnet macaque, tiger, leopard, jungle cat, wild dog, sloth bear, smooth-coated otter, palm civet, striped hyena, several species of deer, Indian pangolin, and giant flying squirrel.
Located amid the thick and forests of the Nallamalai hills, in the northeastern area of Kurnool District and on the banks of river Krishna, Srisailam is about 232 km from Hyderabad. It is a unique combination of forest sanctuary and pilgrimage town and is a weekend break from Hyderabad.
The forests of Srisailam are home to India's largest tiger reserve. Its temples have heroic legends from the Mahabharata and Ramayana; sculpted in stone on the walls and the Mahabharata epic refers to Srisailam as Sri Parvata or the blessed hill. It is also the site of one of the 12 Jyotirlingams, which are natural stone formations in the shape of a lingam and dedicated to Lord Shiva. |
