Situated 45 kms from Chandrapur, Tadoba is a mixed teak forest jungle and is the oldest national park in the state. It is spread over many acres and set around a tranquil lake. Tadoba gets its name from the local tribal god "Taru". The legend goes that the village chief "Taru" was killed in an epic fight with the tiger. All the local villagers worship him as the deity of Tadoba. The Tadoba National Park has facilities for tourists to stay overnight. This national park has more than thousand species of plants, 28 species of mammals, 181 species of birds, around 20 species of reptiles, 5 species of amphibians, besides large variety of fishes, insects and other life forms. The main attraction of Pench is the tiger, one also has chances to see leopards, gaur, wild boar, nilgai, sambar and chital. The Tadoba Lake is at the centre of the reserve. It has migratory ducks visiting in winter, and is also home to crocodiles.
