Milling around the city's most famous landmark the Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple
are hordes of devotees, tourists and citizens going about their daily
affairs. This is the home of Lord Vishnu who shelters under the canopy
of the sacred serpent - the many hooded Anantha after whom this seaside
town is named. It is from the hallowed sanctum of the ancient temple
that Maharaja Marthanda Varma (1729-1758), the mighty Travancore ruler,
took the step of dedicating his city to the lord. He contented himself
with ruling as a mere slave or dasa. However he laid the
foundations for a legal mechanism that effectively protected the
