About Tuticorin Tourism
About
Tuticorin Thoothukudi, popularly referred to as Tuticorin, is a city in the
Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu. It has been a centre for maritime trade and
pearl fishery for more than a century now, hence the town is also known as
"Pearl town". The natural harbour
with a rich hinterland activated the development of the Port. It developed from
a small fishing village into a flourishing Portuguese colony in the 16th
century and further expanded during Dutch and British occupancies; the port
later declined with the growth of Madras.
Tuticorin is a seaport which serves southern Tamil Nadu including the inland
cities of Coimbatore, Madurai and Tirunelveli. It is one of the
seaports in India
with a history dating back to the 6 th century.
