One of the main things to see is the Kanaka Durga temple dedicated to the goddess and protector of the city.
There are also the 7th century Udavalli cave temples, about 8 km from Vijaywada, which has a huge reclining Vishnu statue.

Visitors can also go to Amravathi, about 60 km away, which is a major Buddhist centre of the past. It has the ruins of India?s biggest stupa built more than 2000 years ago.
