Alappuzha, also traditionally known as Alleppey, is a coastal town in the southern state of Kerala. Washed the Arabian Sea, Alappuzha is one of the most exotic backwater sites of India. It is very picturesque with interlocked canals, beaches and lagoons. This tiny market place sometimes called the ‘Venice of the east’ is famous for its annual Nehru Trophy boat race. Apart from attracting tourists because of its natural beauty, temples and houseboats, the town is known for its coir products which are of superior quality. The year round weather of this small town is usually temperate and humid since it lies on the coast. There is not much variation in temperatures between the summer and winter. The weather is relatively more pleasant during the winter seasons. The summer season generally last from March to May. It is mostly humid throughout this time with moderate temperatures of 22° Celsius and the cool breeze from the beach makes sure you can cope up with the peak temperatures of 35° Celsius. The climate of Alappuzha is more pleasant during the winter season. The temperature in winters ranges between 20° Celsius to 32° Celsius. The winter season spans between the months from December to February. It receives year round rain-fall. The southwest monsoons winds bring heavy rainfall in the months of May to July. In the months of October-November, it receives another good dose of rainfall from northeast monsoons. The average rainfall received by the region is 2763 mm. The month of January is considered peak season and bookings should be done in a week’s advance. The months ranging from August to September and February to March are best time to visit the city. Around this time the monsoons would have died down and the weather becomes fresh and cool.
