Coonoor is a magical place where you can have a relaxed break ... Absolutely calm and quiet and undisturbed and not very corded ... You can stay here as long as you love ...
The main attractions are, sims park which is a usual part just a smaller version of botanical or any other parks in Ooty ... Then there is lambs rock which is place where you can walk along and have beautiful pics and amazing time and then there is the dolphins which is another view point and place to relax and you have some of the best places to have a tea break as there are small cafe which has amazing tea and snack along with great views ... And on the way you can see the ketti valley which is one of the biggest valleys in south india
Ooty is just 20 kms away from here

I read a lot on the Internet about how Ooty is a concrete jungle and how Coonoor is pristine and beautiful. I also read about how the climate of Coonoor is superior to that of Ooty.

Now here are my observations:-

1) Ooty for all its concrete development is superior to Coonoor in terms of breathtaking views.

2) The climate of Ooty is noticeably cooler to that of Coonoor. It is possible that Coonoor may be pleasant during Nov Dec and Jan when Ooty may be uncomfortably chilly. During all the remaining months, however, Ooty is much cooler than Coonoor. There is no comparison at all. Ooty's climate is superior and is the sort of climate which we plain-dwellers seek.

3) Ooty has got dozens and dozens of eating options and the variety is immense. In Coonoor, you only have a handful of restaurants and no great shakes at that.

Conclusion:- If you are living in the plains in sweltering heat and want a break by going to a hill station where you will get cold breezes, mist, fog and cool afternoons, Ooty is the best choice. Coonoor is a distant poor cousin.

Coonoor is a hill station which is located 18 KMs from Ooty, one can reach Coonoor from Ooty by Bus or by Train (make sure you book tickets in advance though irctc). The journey from Ooty to Coonoor is splendid, you will enjoy the rides.

When you reach Coonoor, you will be given multiple options for sight seeing like tea gardens, Lamb's Rock, SIM's Park, Dolphin's Nose, Waterfall.

Note that if you go to Dolphin's Nose then you will get Tea Garden and Lamb's Rock on the way.

People at the tea Garden's factory also walk you through the process of making tea and it's different flavors.

There are lot of places to visit in Coonoor so make sure you get some extra time in hand.

"Cool, Calm and Relax"

  • 5.0/7
  • Posted Apr 25, 2016
Coonoor is very cool and calm place. Ooty is overcrowded. You will not seek calmness in Ooty. Coonnor is the right place to relax and calm yourself which is just 17 km from Ooty.

Coonoor is slightly lower in altitude than Ooty. Weather of Coonoor is very Moderate, neither too hot nor too cold.

Go to tea gardens, enjoy the greenery around. Visit to the tea factors and buy varieties of tea. There are many Eucalyptus oils factors around. Visit them and buy them available in purest form. Go to Lamb's rock, enjoy the view of Sleeping Lady mountain, visit Dolphin nose view point and just wonder how mother nature has carved the mountains.

Don't want to get out anywhere? Want to be a City Slicker? Visit to Sim's park which is in the City's centre. Get around the city, enjoy this marvelous hilly region. Want to be adventurous? Coonoor is surrounded by many small Hamlets like Ketty valley, Wellington. Go to these places. Enjoy the breath taking views of Nilgiri mountains.

Coonoor is a nice place, not many places to visit only 3 or 4. But you can enjoy the climate. Ooty will be very cold during nights, but Coonoor is very comfortable. Dolphins nose, lamb's rock and sims park are the few places nearby.

"Virgin Hill station"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Apr 4, 2016
A wonderful place with virgin hill which are not explored by tourists. One will find beautiful trails and tea gardens all around this place. The railway station has a heritage look. You must take a train ride (world famous Nilgiri Mountain Railway) to Ooty. It will take nearly 90 min. The train passes through several tunnels and the scenery is amazing.

If you want to visit Coonoor which is one of the best locations in Nilagiris, don't stay there. Stay at a place called Kotagiri. This location is a quiet and beautiful hill station, not so crowded as Coonoor. It is about 25 km from Coonoor and 28 km from Ooty, which is another wonderful hill station. Many of the 'must see' spots of Ooty and Coonoor are outside the respective towns and if you have your own/hired vehicle, these can be easily reached from Kotagiri. The journey from Kotagiri to these locations will be very pleasant with tea gardens all around.
When you are in Kotagiri, do not miss a visit to Kodanadu View point (visit it between 9am and 4pm). This place is also around 20+ km away. There are a number of budget resorts, cottages in Kotagiri which are much cheaper than those in Coonoor or Ooty.
