About Elephanta Caves Tourism
Declared as the World Heritage Site, Elephanta caves are situated on Elephanta Island in Mumbai harbor. The island located in Arabian Sea has two groups of caves. One of these caves are dedicated to Hindu sect Shaiva and second the smaller one is dedicated to Buddhism. The rock cut architecture of the caves has been dated to between the 5th and 8th centuries. The caves were designated as World heritage site by UNESCO in 1987.

Although the identity of the creators of the architecturial masterpieces built in Elephant Caves is disputed, it is believed that the Chalukyas and later Rashtrakutas are the creators among many others.

Elephanta was ruled by another Chalukyan dynasty, and then by Gujarat Sultanate, who surrendered it to the Portuguese in 1534. By then, Elephanta was called Gharapuri, which indicates a hill settlement.

The island of Elephants is 1.5 miles in length with two hills rising to a height of about 500 ft. A deep ravine cuts through the heart of the island from north to south. On the west, the hill rises gently from the sea and stretches east across the ravine and rises gradually to the extreme east to a height of 568 ft.

The two hills of the island, the western and the eastern, have five rock-cut caves in the western part and a brick stupa on the eastern hill on its top, composed of two caves with few rock-cut cisterns.

The island has two groups of caves in the rock cut architectural style. Five caves situated on the western hills of the Island are devoted to the Hindu sect Shaiva and various Hindu sculptures are chiseled in these caves. Famous sculptures of Hindu caves are Ravana holding up the Kailash, Shiva-Parvati on Kailash, Ardhanarishvara, Trimurti, Wedding of Shiva, Linga, Nataraja, Kartikeya, Yogishvara, and Matrikas .

In the second group of caves, various Buddhist architectures can be spotted depicting numerous pictures of Gautam Buddha and several sculptures from Buddhist literature, Jatak Kathayein.

Although, a numbers of caves have been ruined during the Portuguese period and several damaged by various means, Elephant Caves still presents a rich heritage of ancient history to the tourist. More and more people visit Elephanta Caves to witness the Architectural masterpieces preserved in the caves of Elephanta.

3 Elephanta Caves Traveller Reviews

"So near.....but yet too far." new review

Elephanta Caves Experience: A beautiful monument from the history stands smiling at you just an hour away from the Gate Way of Mumbai........Stone structures....awesome views...and street shops keep you with themselves for almost 4 - 5 hours...A must place to visit if you are intrested in Architecture. Also its a place you can go to just for fun.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: You can shop there for hours...but you need to have an excellent bargaining tactics or you might have a big hole in your pocket at the end of the day......Food is not that great...but edible. However the overall atmosphere and the sceneic view is exellent.....
Activities & things to do: You can go the caves....clime the mountain and go near the Old war ammunition kept as monuments....Or just chil below one of the trees....and spend hours with your family and friends.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: You can reach Church gate station and from there you can wither walk or take a taxi to Gate Way of India. From Gate Way of India there are ferries who take you to Elephanta caves. Its almost a 40 mins travel in the ferry. Once you get down from the ferry you need to walk from the Jetty and follow the road....It will tak you to the Caves. There is a small fee for the entry to the caves.

"Not a great trip!!" new review

Elephanta Caves Experience: Elephanta Caves is an over-rated tourist destination 1hr away from Mumbai by a ferry which you need to take from the Gateway Of India. They charge Rs. 120 for a return trip. However once you are in the boat if you need to sit on the higher level of the boat they charge you Rs 10 extra per head which is just day light robbery by the boat attendant to make some quick bucks... Once you get there..you are greeted by the toy train which caters to all who believe in conserving their energy...however they charge you Rs. 10 per head for this too. If you choose to walk you will come across a lot of small stalls on route where you will find highly overpriced artefacts which is mainly aimed at gullible foreigners..but if you bargain you could pull off quite a good deal.. You have to pay Rs 5 once you have to actually enter the pathway to the caves. You have to walk up a highly commercialised path up towards the entrance of the caves. At these shops you can bargain and get things for 3/4th the price they quote. Once you reach the top of the path you need to pay Rs 10 to enter the caves. There are a total of 5 caves to be seen. The sculptures were disfigured but the good news is that they are being restored.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: There are two canons on the Canon Hill which is pretty cool also you get a breathtaking view from there.. There are a couple of restaurants - The MTDC restaurant and the Elephanta port restaurant where ridiculously overpriced... I had the Chicken Tikka Biriyani which was the worst biriyani I had in my life.. Apart from these there are local ladies selling fruits, nuts, vada pavs, soft drinks etc. You can find good handicraft items and artefacts but make sure you bargain and get a good deal..cos everything is overpriced...
Activities & things to do: You can walk around have a look at the caves..Check out the canon hills..That's about it...
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Please make sure you don't travel during the monsoons because the sea gets rough and the ferry services are discontinued till monsoon gets over..However some of the ferry operators ignore the rule and run the ferry which is very dangerous.. Don't fall for the old ladies who offer to get their pictures clicked..they start asking you for money once its done.. Look out for the locals who I feel are waiting for an opportunity to rip off visitors... Dont mess with the monkeys... If you are the nature types and wary enough you could have a good time with your friends family etc..
