About Gandhidham Tourism

Gandhidham or Gandhinagar, is situated in the Kachchh (Kutch) district, towards the north-western part of Gujarat. The port city of Gandhidham is a popular tourist destination owing to its historical significance. The town of Gandhidham was built in the 1950s, at a location which was a few miles inland to the port of Kandla on the Gulf of Kutch. The prime aim to build the town of Gandhidham was to accommodate the refugees from Sindh of Pakistan, post partition. The place was given the name Gandhidham as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhidham was a barren land. Hence the residents had to depend on Kandla port and free trade zone related activities for their living. The town gradually grew over the years. After the earthquake of 2001, the town of Gandhidham has undergone a major change. Now Gandhidham is a fast growing town with several manufacturing units in and around the town. Gandhidham is divided in to several sectors and wards. The town of Gandhidham has a unique cosmopolitan population since the residents belong to different parts of India. The majority of the population of Gandhidham constitutes of the Sindhis. Gujarati and Hindi are the languages that are commonly used in Gandhidham. Gandhidham is a famous pilgrim centre for Jains as the region consists of many Jain centres and temples. The Bhardeshwar Temple of Gandhidham is one among the prime pilgrim destinations for the Jains in India. Akshardham and Purneshwar are some other popular religious centres in Gandhidham. Kandla Port also is a centre of tourist attraction. Gandhidham is well connected to all the major cities of Gujarat and the neighboring states. Gandhidham is at a distance of about 289 km from Ahmedabad, 396 km from Baroda, 935 km from Pune and 1082 km from Delhi. Gandhidham Experience: Only thing you will see here are trucks,trucks and more trucks.and some dust.nothing much happens in this heart of Kutch.Small city.Full of outsiders.Not much choice in terms of hotel.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Nothing much.Try big bite.

Activities & things to do: Gandhi Samadhi.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Trains from Surat.

Gandhidham Experience: Gandhidham and Gandhinagar are not same. Gandhinagar is 330 kms from Gandhidham & is the capitol of Gujarat state near Ahmedabad. Very special feature of Gandhidham is that this is the only place other than Delhi where Gandhiji's ashes are kept at Gandhi Samadhi (A memorial) The city has has the largest educational complex of Kutch District, Tolani Vidya Mandir Campus.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Sight seeing:Gandhi samadhi &Saadh Belo.Jain temple Bhadreshwar -30 kms Food:Typical Sindhi brekfast Dal -Pakwan.OR Gujarati breakfast Phaphada -Jalebi.

Activities & things to do: Shopping traditional Kutchi handicrafts, Ajrakh, Bandhni,- Embroidered Bed sheets sarees dress material

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Direct daily trains from Bombay & Delhi.Weekly trains from Pune,Bangaluru,Howrah ,Kamakhya &Kerala. Daily flights from Mumbai to Kanla(local airport) or Bhuj (50 kms away). Flights to this side are very expensive if not booked sufficiently in advance.

"Gandhidham - Peaceful city"

Gandhidham Experience: A very peaceful city for those who loves combination of urban and rural touch. Beautiful places for shopping and food.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: For shopping: for indian: Arora Handicrafts(bandhani), Muskaan Boutique. For western: Spyker, Reebok, V Mart and Amrapur

Activities & things to do: Visit Kandala port where many of the ships will be there. One can have inside view after obtaining permission from the authority. A nice place for food. Visit Zanda Chauk for wide varieties of golas. Visit IFFCO Colony there are more then 15 gardens+ temple + lake.

Tourist places in Gandhidham

Gandhidham, situated in Gujarat, is famous for ancient temples and a monument dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. Flamingo Colony, Khavada handicrafts and cattle rearing in Banni are some of the prominent tourist attractions of the region. Flamingo Colony is known for Bhardeshwari, a Jain pilgrimage centre, where the deity is visible from the ground and the first floor.

The Purneshwar Temple is another important tourist spot in the region which was built between the 9th and 10th centuries. Gandhidham is also popular for the Akshardham Temple, a mosque, a stepwell and a palace, situated near the main town.

Shri Chandra Prabh Labdhi Dham Teerth in the Kutch District is the chief attraction of the region which is dedicated to Shri Chandra Prabhuji Bhagvan. The Kandla seaport, Adipur and Anjar are other popular tourist sites near Gandhidham.
