The city of Gorakhpur is located in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh at a distance of 90 km from the Nepal border. Gorakhpur, famous for its blend of cultural past and modern present, is a popular religious destination for Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Sikhism and Jainism.

Geologically, the bowl shaped Gorakhpur city is situated along the river basins of River Rapti and River Rohini. Gorakhpur is bordered by River Rapti on its west, by dense sal forests in its east and by Ramgarh Tal in the south. The north border of the Gorakhpur is constituted by the booming industrial area of the city.
Gorakhpur and surrounding areas are rich in cultural heritage as they were important centres of the Aryan civilisation. The ancient city of Gorakhpur was an integral territory of the Kosala kingdom of Lord Rama during the Vedic period.

As per Vedic scriptures, Gorakhpur was initially ruled by the Iksvaku dynasty. Later, it became a part of Sishunaga, Nanda, Maurya, Shunga, Kushana and Gupta dynasties. Gorakhpur was a part of the 16 Mahajanapadas before the time of Buddha.

Gorakhpur was also the abode of Lord Buddha, who renounced worldly pleasures at the confluence of rivers Rapti and Rohini in 400 BC. The region is also associated with Lord Mahavir, the 24th tirthankar and the founder of Jainism.

Gorakhpur came under the rule of Mohammad Ghori in the 12th century. It shot to fame in the 12th century when the Hindu ascetic and the disciple of Yogi Matsyendranath, Saint Gorakhnath, started advocating Nath Sampradaya. The city derived its name from the Gorakhnath Temple, constructed at the location where the saint used to preach Hath Yoga. Later, the place was conquered by Turkish rulers, Qutub ud din Aibek and Bahadur Shah.

Gorakhpur is also associated with the famous poet and philosopher Kabir, who composed and propagated most of his couplets at this place. Gorakhpur again rose to prominence in the early 20th century, when Gandhiji withdrew the Non-Cooperation Movement due to the act of violence at Chauri Chaura of Gorakhpur. Gorakhpur is the place where Gita Press is located, which compiles and publishes ancient Hindu scriptures and other religious books.

Gorakhpur is famous for being the converging point of different religions. The city is also famous for its art, music and dance shows and festivals. Chauri Chaura, Kushinagar, Kapilavastu, Lumbini, etc. are some popular excursion destinations around Gorakhpur.

The headquarters of North East Railways, the city can be easily accessed by road and rail. The vicinity of Lucknow, Kushinagar and Kapilavastu makes it a popular tourist destination.

Another popular tourist attraction of Gorakhpur is the month-long Tarkulha Mela organised at the Tarkulha Devi Temple. Beginning on April 1, 2012, the festival is organised to celebrate Chaitra Ram Navami. The temple where the event is held is associated with Bandhu Singh, a freedom fighter. To celebrate the occasion, special prayers and pujas are held at the temple.

"An amazing visit to Gorakhnath temple" new review

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted 2 weeks ago
I have visited Tarmandal park. It is very beautiful place and suitable for peace of mind. After that I have visited Gorakshnath mandir. I have seen many people praying there. The temple dedicated to baba shri Gorakhnath is a place where one can find ultimate peace. The temple is marvellous and very well maintained. There is a small lake for boating inside the temple premises. The temple premises also has a market where tourists can buy a lot of memories to take home. The Gorakh pur district takes its name from Gorakhnath, who was a saint of the 'Nath Sampradaya'. A famous shrine called Gorakhnath Nath was built in his honour at the location where he practised his austerities. Must visit place for Gorakhpur city.

"Enjoyable experience in Gorakhpur"

  • 4.0/7

Gorakhpur city is quite nice. Its quite nice travelling here.. There are beautiful places all across the city. Its has college and all necessary hospitality facility available in near by place. And there is garden much beautiful and also some interesting mode of transport which is not mostly found in other city like cycle riskha, horse ride, bullock cart. The best part of Gorakhpur is that all hotels are lined up just in-front of the railway station and so it becomes easy to locate the hotels.

I visited here a month ago and believe me guys this place is wonderful. I had spent very good time here with my family members. Very nice place to stay. Gorakhnath temple is very famous temple. Very peaceful environment in the temple. You can sit there and relax for whatever time you want. It is very spacious. Gita press is very known place and traditional and cultural printing. Its publication is country wide famous and one must go there and purchase Kalyan magazine, one of the best magazines published by Geeta press.

The environment within the city is average. It is very over crowded. Also little bit risky to travel at night for new people. One mall is also there from where you can purchase branded items. Use rickshaw to go from one place to another which gives you quite good experience of UP culture and also to look at the city from all view points. The Bodh Gaya and Kushinagar is near the Gorakhpur which is famous for the Buddha temple.. Over all it is a nice and cheap city which will surely delight you all.

City environment is average. It is very over crowded. Also little bit risky to travel at night for new people. Gorakhnath temple is very good place to see Hindu culture and saints. One mall is also there from where you can purchase branded items. I love Gorakhpur, because I born in Gorakhpur. My hometown is also situated in Gorakhpur. Gorakhpur is basically famous for the Gorakhnath Temple along with largest platform in India. And it is also famous for the airbase of air force. Gorakhpur is situated in the eastern UP and northern India. For being relaxed and for roaming it is better city. The bodhgaya and Kushinagar is near the Gorakhpur which is famous for the Buddha temple.

"Nice City in East UP"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Oct 17, 2014
A very nice city in east UP to spend holidays. Some mix culture of village culture with some joy of small city culture. Some one can see some old values here where religion belongs to the inner peace of the Gorakhpur city. World's largest railway platform is established in past years. Near to Gorakhpur Mahatma Gautam Buddha palace in Kushinagar is mahaparinirvan sthal.
