Gurudongmar Info

  • State: Sikkim
  • Famous for/as: Waterfront
  • District: North Sikkim
Located at a height of 17,500 feet, Gurudongmar Lake is popular as one of the highest lakes in the world. The lake lies adjacent to the Tibetan plateau on the northern side of the Khangchengyao Mountain in North Sikkim. In ancient times, the lake remained frozen all the time and hence, there was no source of water in the area.

According to legend, once Guru Padmasambhava, who brought Tantric Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century, passed through the region. On his arrival, local residents pleaded him to provide them with a source of water. As Guru Padmasambhava touched certain portions of the lake, the snow melted. Till now, the portions touched by him do not freeze even in extreme winters. Since then, the water of the lake is considered sacred by Buddhists and Hindus.

The main attraction near the lake is Sarva Dharma Sthal, which is a place of worship for people of all religions. Gurudongmar Lake can be visited by only tourists of Indian nationality. Lachen, which is about 120 km away from Gangtok, forms the base for Gurudongmar Lake. Tourists can reach Lachen by taxis from Gangtok or by buses from Mangan.

Additionally, Gurudongmar can also be visited as a part of a North Sikkim Package Tour, which is organised by authorised travel operators. The best time to visit this lake is from March to June and again from November end to December.

Gurudongmar is one of the weekend getaway options for travelers living in Gangtok and Kalimpong.

"Memory of a lifetime" new review

Well what a fantabulous place this is to hike or ride. The place is so sereen. Chilly and sunny t the same time. Do carry cold cloths. Road are pretty bad till a stretch. Last 14km is the best road in the world. And believe me when I say the best road in the world. Make a trip slightly early in morning so as to explore the place and walk around the lake. Pre monsoon season might be a good time(apr-jun). People looking for comfort please take a cab. Roads are bad and so total distance of 66km will take 3-4 hrs on bike and maybe 3 on a car.

"Nature's Mystical Beauty"

I had always wanted to visit the Pangong Lake in Ladakh known for its breathtaking beauty, but when I visited Gurudongmar it was no less an experience, the enroute view & the beauty of the lake just mesmerized me. Truly one of the most beautiful lakes in India. The best time to visit is April-June & people may experience breathing problems@ that height, so kindly carry Camphor to ease up your breathing problem & enjoy the beauty uninterrupted.

"The Heaven on Earth - Gurudongmar Lake"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Jul 17, 2016
It was really an amazing experience when we visited the Gurudongmar Lake in 2009. It was 180 kms from Gangtok. One should opt for two-nights & three-days package to visit the lake safely. Inner-line permit is must and it can be collected from Gangtok. Road to Gurudongmar Lake is very dangerous. People with little children and elderly people should avoid the trip. One should be aware of the weather conditions too. Landslide is common. It's situated in North Sikkim and the China Border is very close. One should return from the lake by 12:30 to 1:00pm to avoid extreme weather conditions. One has to take rest at Lachen, a small village 65kms away from the Lake. Hotels and Home-stays are available there. People who have breathing problem or Cardiac problem must avoid because Oxygen level is very low as the Lake is situated at the altitude of 17, 800 ft I. E. 5400 metre.

"Truly paradise on earth"

Lifetime experience & worthy of all troubles. It's a holy, pristine lake at >17000 ft. Awesome view with a perfectly clear blue sky & snow-capped mountains with glaciers. The tough, strenuous journey starts from Lachen, a village of north sikkim at 3 to 4 am. Has to ascend from 9000 to almost 18000 foot via 60 km road. Sunrise enroute, have hot tea, noodles at Thangu, the last Indian civil village enroute. Crossing chopta valley area becomes like deser. Plateau land, vast open dry fields amongst mammoth mountains. Reached Gurudongmar lake in almost 4 hours.

Proper permit is required to visit North Sikkim, which is made by the authorised travel agents/drivers. Ensure physical fitness before going to such heights. Little dizziness, headache, breathing trouble usually occur there. Be calm and don't do too much physical activities reaching there. Don't spend too much time (1 hour average). Though it seems endless beauty. The half or fully frozen lake, valley, snow peaks, clear sky. Really the beauty is hardly explainable.

Follow the army instructions and road condition is not so good except last few km.

"Pristine beauty"

Gurudongmar Lake is really a serene and pristine beauty with snow capped peaks in the backdrop. It is situated at 17610 feet altitude so one can imagine the oxygen levels over there - Biting cold and difficulty in breathing. It is 76km from lachen and the road to that lake From lachen is completely rocky making the journey really strenuous and tiring. It is located near Cho Lhamu lake (From where Teesta river originates). You don't get a permit to that place easily for it almost snows all round the year and is in a restricted place. The last few miles before reaching the lake, the road well laden amidst the vast plains and barren hills forms an awesome scenery. The journey was indeed beautiful but challenging. It is still worth it!

"The tough journey and the wonderful destination"

  • 7.0/7

While we started from Gangtok after acquiring travel permits from local police for travel to Gurudongmar, the road beyond Gangtok is like a no road with ditches, stones, slips, muds, on every moment changing the angle of your vehicle to -30 or +30 degrees. Only at some places where there are towns, the road seems to be smooth. By evening we reached Lachen, the major town enroute Gurudongmar.

We stayed at a hotel in Lachen with all comforts provided. Resumed our journey as early as 3.00 AM. At about 7.00 AM we reached a Military camp where our permits were checked. Some members of our group were forbidden to travel ahead because they were above 60 years. On our insistence, Military doctor checked their Blood Pressure and as it was above normal due to high altitude, did not allow them to proceed further. After a tough journey of 8 kms beyond Military camp, we reached Gurudongmar lake.

This lake is situated at 17000 ft above sea level and is a pilgrimage place for Sikhs. It is said that Guru Nanak had visited this place and when the local inhabitants complained of non availability of water in winter due to frozen ;lake, He touched the lake with his Daang (stick). That part of lake is now never frozen even when temperature outside is -40 degrees.

There is a Gurudwara at the lake and the Sikkim Government has declared the place as Sarv Dharam Sthal (All Religions Place). The spectacular view of lake and the scenic beauty of place will ever remain in memory.

It is a very good place. There is lake and a temple beside the lake. In winter season it is very beautiful and all is covered up the snow and sceneries just so natural that people mainly from foreign countries also came here to visit this place.

You have to hire sooner or something some type of car to go this place and you have to hold there for 1 or 2 days and you could if you're lucky you could watch the snow fall and here on the way to gurudongmar you also see the world toppest Cafe of Indian BSF

"Heaven on Earth, a must go!"

  • 7.0/7

I can hardly describe what I see there. It was a lifetime experience. The beauty, I can't describe in words. We, a group of five started our journey at about 4am from Lachen. It was completely dark outside. About 6:30am we reached Thangu. The valley was surrounded by snow capped mountains with the first morning rays upon them, which turned them into golden colour. After some coffee in the army canteen (they are really helpful) we started again for Gurudongmar. After the last army check post suddenly we entered into a flat empty valley. It was like a snow desert. Filled with dust like snow with no sign of any tree. After 30min of drive through that desert final we reached our destination. If there is any heaven it may look like this. The lake was completely frozen, cloud was covering its surface, and sun was shining through the cloud. It was beauty, that can make you speechless. Once in life you should visit Gurudongmar lake.

"The best place in Sikkim-Gurudongmar"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Dec 15, 2015
Gurudongmar is a lake in North Sikkim. Situated above 17000 ft, it is the best location in Sikkim. We went there from Lachen. Generally, the journey to the lake begins around 3 am in the morning and it takes 5 hours to reach the spot. The condition of road is pathetic and the journey is quite exhausting. However, its serene and magical once you reach the spot. Don't smoke or run at the spot as it may cause breathing problem. Try to book a sharing tour from Gangtok itself. The packages consist of flooding, lodging and transport and are quite reasonable.

"Blue is the colour of serenity and Gurudongmar lake"

  • 6.5/7
  • Posted Oct 3, 2015
As the sun prepares to wake up, the nature is up for a welcome. A fire in the snow as you travel through the snowcapped mountains from lachen to visit the gurudongmar lake. Located 15000 ft above the sea level, this place is a definition of serenity by itself. The crystal clear water turned blue, thanks to the perfect reflection of the clear blue sky above, surrounded by snow caps will make you feel out of the world.

How to Reach: Reach Gangtok (sikkim) via new Jalpaiguri (West Bengal). Every Hotel in Gangtok provides conducted tour to the lake. You have to start around 9 am in the morning from gangtok to reach Lachen by late afternoon. Road conditions are not good. Sikkim is still recovering from the devastating earthquake. Sometimes you have to wait for hours in the road. However, the scenic beauty will take your breath away. A night's stay in Lachen. Start for Gurudongmar from Lachen at around 4 am in the morning.

As every good things come with a price tag, this place is no exception. The air is extremely thin. Do not go with children or people with weak heart & breathing troubles. If you are a smoker, try not to smoke from the day before visiting the lake

Things to Carry: heavy winter garments, popcorn (no joking), chewing gum. There is an army base there and a cafe maintained by them (worlds highest). They are ready to help, let there be slightest discomfort. So nothing to worry.
