The tough journey and the wonderful destination

While we started from Gangtok after acquiring travel permits from local police for travel to Gurudongmar, the road beyond Gangtok is like a no road with ditches, stones, slips, muds, on every moment changing the angle of your vehicle to -30 or +30 degrees. Only at some places where there are towns, the road seems to be smooth. By evening we reached Lachen, the major town enroute Gurudongmar.

We stayed at a hotel in Lachen with all comforts provided. Resumed our journey as early as 3.00 AM. At about 7.00 AM we reached a Military camp where our permits were checked. Some members of our group were forbidden to travel ahead because they were above 60 years. On our insistence, Military doctor checked their Blood Pressure and as it was above normal due to high altitude, did not allow them to proceed further. After a tough journey of 8 kms beyond Military camp, we reached Gurudongmar lake.

This lake is situated at 17000 ft above sea level and is a pilgrimage place for Sikhs. It is said that Guru Nanak had visited this place and when the local inhabitants complained of non availability of water in winter due to frozen ;lake, He touched the lake with his Daang (stick). That part of lake is now never frozen even when temperature outside is -40 degrees.

There is a Gurudwara at the lake and the Sikkim Government has declared the place as Sarv Dharam Sthal (All Religions Place). The spectacular view of lake and the scenic beauty of place will ever remain in memory.

Heaven on Earth, a must go!

I can hardly describe what I see there. It was a lifetime experience. The beauty, I can't describe in words. We, a group of five started our journey at about 4am from Lachen. It was completely dark outside. About 6:30am we reached Thangu. The valley was surrounded by snow capped mountains with the first morning rays upon them, which turned them into golden colour. After some coffee in the army canteen (they are really helpful) we started again for Gurudongmar. After the last army check post suddenly we entered into a flat empty valley. It was like a snow desert. Filled with dust like snow with no sign of any tree. After 30min of drive through that desert final we reached our destination. If there is any heaven it may look like this. The lake was completely frozen, cloud was covering its surface, and sun was shining through the cloud. It was beauty, that can make you speechless. Once in life you should visit Gurudongmar lake.
