Gurudongmar Info

  • State: Sikkim
  • Famous for/as: Waterfront
Located at a height of 17,500 feet, Gurudongmar Lake is popular as one of the highest lakes in the world. The lake lies adjacent to the Tibetan plateau on the northern side of the Khangchengyao Mountain in North Sikkim. In ancient times, the lake remained frozen all the time and hence, there was no source of water in the area.

According to legend, once Guru Padmasambhava, who brought Tantric Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century, passed through the region. On his arrival, local residents pleaded him to provide them with a source of water. As Guru Padmasambhava touched certain portions of the lake, the snow melted. Till now, the portions touched by him do not freeze even in extreme winters. Since then, the water of the lake is considered sacred by Buddhists and Hindus.

The main attraction near the lake is Sarva Dharma Sthal, which is a place of worship for people of all religions. Gurudongmar Lake can be visited by only tourists of Indian nationality. Lachen, which is about 120 km away from Gangtok, forms the base for Gurudongmar Lake. Tourists can reach Lachen by taxis from Gangtok or by buses from Mangan.

Additionally, Gurudongmar can also be visited as a part of a North Sikkim Package Tour, which is organised by authorised travel operators. The best time to visit this lake is from March to June and again from November end to December.

"Life time experience!"

  • 7/7
  • Posted 2 months ago
It's located 68 km away from Lachen, a small hamlet of North Sikkim. You have to reach there as early as possible, preferably between 8 to 9 am. After that weather fluctuates heavily. Though we had breathing problem due to high altitude and a tiring journey throughout as the road was uneven. But finally the way we exclaimed after the 1st glimpse of the lake was both spontaneous and overwhelming. I don't have enough words to explain the serenity of that place. It's amazing and probably my best travel experience so far.

"Only Indians allowed!"

  • 7/7
  • Posted Mar 21, 2015
A must visit place for Indian as foreigners are not allowed there. Landscape with awesome views, exiting ways on hight at around 17,000 ft, you have to wake up early to reach there as I don't think cars are allowed after 11 or 12 in the noon because speed of air increase to risky level.

"Experience the amazing snowfall"

  • 6/7
  • Posted Feb 6, 2014
Encountered unusually heavy snowfall on the way and had to cancel the trip till the weather improved. We resumed journey after two days. Lake is very sacred and located in a remote place. Except military, hardly anyone lives on that entire stretch. We found snowfall more enjoyable than the lake itself.

"Not just a holy lake, much more than..."

  • Posted Aug 26, 2013
Gurudongmar lake is situated in North Sikkim. It is believed to be holy lake for Sikh and other religion and believed to be curing many diseases with its water. It is surrounded by snow clad mountains. Heavenly.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: You need to pack your lunch from Lachen as no restaurants are available on lake.

Activities & things to do: There is a Sikh Shrine there on the bank of the lake. You can not do any activity as it is high altitude lake but it gives you immense peace and calm on visiting the lake.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: It is high altitude lake so be cautious and careful for AMS. Preferably start taking Diamox in advance after consultation with your physician to increase breathing and avoid AMS. Even if you feel AMS, start descending immediately.
Regular MPV taxis ply from Gangtok to Lachen to Gurudongmer with night halt in Lachen. But if you want to take your own car, you will have to convince the tourism dept of Sikkim. And it can be really tough. I had traveled in my own car and the experience was simply bliss. One of the most enriching experience of life. The rhodon flowers on the way to Gurudongnmer adds to the beauty of the journey and if you are lucky enough, you will be greeted with Snow fall as well.

  • Posted May 7, 2013
When our car stopped and I saw the lake, I was just stunned. Cant narrate its amazing.
The lake was frozen and the panoramic view was fabulous.. Me and my friend take of our shirt and playing with stone over the lake. Our driver said cant go forward much if ice break and you fall in water you are in a very big problem. When sun shine is much high then ice breaking its really beautiful.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Nothing

Activities & things to do: Nothing. Just feel the beauty of the Lake

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Because it is 17500 ft you will very fit to reach there. Breathing problem is common in Gurudongmar. I suggest take pop corn and chuing gum with you always relax not doing much activites

"It seems heaven in earth."

  • Posted Nov 11, 2010
Gurudongmar is in the north Sikkim, a famous lake surrounded by the mountains. It is not a residential place, situated at about 17,400 ft high altitude. Tourists stay at Lachen and start journey for it early in the morning by car and back within 12 to 12.30 pm as the weather be frequently whimsical. The way to this place is a memorable journey and hospitality of the Indian Army is remarkable. The scenic beauty of the place is heavenly and unforgettable. Last week of March or 1st week of April is the best time to visit the place. Don't forget to bring 'korpoor' (a chemical for takinga smell) as it helps in breathing problem. A temple is also here maintained by Indian Army

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: No food is available here except free tea served by Indian Army. No shop is available here also except at Chongu (14,000 ft.) on the way to Gurudongmer. The scenic beauty of the way and the lake is trancendental.

Activities & things to do: After reaching Gurudongmer, wait for few minutes to accommodate the high altitude and walk very slowly. Woolen clothes a must wear.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Tourists stay at Lachen and start journey for it early in the morning by car and back within 12 to 12.30 pm as the weather be frequently whimsical.
Persons having breathing troubles should not go there. Book the package tour from Gangtok. Must bring photographs & Election Photo Identity Card.

"Heaven on earth at 17000 ft!"

  • Posted May 28, 2010
Journey (from Lachen, nearby village) starts with lush green mountains, water streams all along the way, winding around Teesta river. Terrain slowly changes to amazingly colorful valleys (seasonal), to snow-clad barren stony mountains, with Indian Military barracks/camps all around. And then comes the best part!! Deep blue lake at 17000 ft, surrounded by snow-clad mountains! Its a site worth taking all the pain to get their.

Journey up-to Lachen is amazingly scenic, with tall mountains, lush green valleys, small streams flowing here and there.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Beyond Thangu, its all defense land, no sign of hotels/eateries etc. Nearest place to stay is Lachen, which is a small village with bare-bone hotels. Gurudongmar lake is THE place on earth to visit, a must see if u are visiting Sikkim!

Activities & things to do: Site-seeing

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Gurudongmar is about 200km from Gangtok. As average speed on hills is ~25km/hr, and there are no hotels nearby this place, one has to take an overnight halt at Lachen (which is the only place around with few basic hotels). Lachen is about 120km from Gangtok, and takes 5 hrs by road. Gurudongmar is about 70km from Lachen and takes ~4hr to reach there.

While most popular vehicle available is Mahindra Maxx, its advisable to spend extra money and take a Scorpio as journey from Lachen onwards is completely off-road stuff. Leave Lachen early morning (like 5AM), halt at Thangu for a nice breakfast, and reach Gurudongmar by 9AM. At 17000 ft, one can expect strong and chilly winds, and can get very cold with clouds. So better take some heavy woolen clothes to be on safer side.
