"Clean City Green City Steel City"

Jamshedpur Experience: Clean City Green City Steel City! You could see this slogan written all around Jamshedpur through the 90s. I used to live in an area called Old Farm Area, in Kadma, Jamshedpur between 1990 and 1996. Recently I took a trip down memory lane to Jamshedpur and to my surprise found that this theme still throbs through the city, which appears to be unexpectedly clean and orderly for a resident of the urban degeneration that is Kolkata.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Some things have changed, like my favourite Ice-cream parlour – Iceberg - has changed into a Cafe Coffee Day (opposite KMPM Inter college, Bistupur). Yet the Boulevard Hotel still towers over it, and I had a comfortable stay there. The best thing about Boulevard is that it is bang in the middle of Bistupur, the primary Market area and 4 km from the railway station, airport and bus stand. Places to see within the city include the enormous Jubilee park – a landscaped park with huge trees, well maintained gardens and Children’s park and Bhubaneshwari Temple located atop a hill.
Activities & things to do: One of the favourite destinations for a picnic is Dimna Lake - a large artificial reservoir made in the 1940s that is nestled among the Dalma hills and is replenished by several seasonal streams and the heavy rains that lash the city during the monsoons. This large water body attracts many birds during the winter and even in summer is a cool retreat away from the city confines. There are regular mini-bus services from Sakchi (ask for the timings for the last returning bus to the city to avoid being stranded overnight). Autos or cars can also be hired.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: With more time on hand you might consider taking on the Dalma hill range itself. Dalma is a Forest Reserve and a trip to it requires prior planning as it requires a night stay at a forest bungalow near the hill top to make your trip worthwhile. One can see the confluence of the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers as broad silver streaks in the sun. At night, sitting on the verandah of the Tata forest bungalow, one can view the lights of the city and spy the periodic bright orange glow of hot slag being discharged from the Steel factory.
