"Visit to Kasauli"

Kasauli Experience: Kasauli is a hill station in Hiamchal. You can reach from nearest rail head, Kalka by Taxi. The travel time from Kalka to Kasauli is about 1 1/2 hour. A nice place to visit during week ends. Do book your accommodation in advance as Hotels remain full during the week ends.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: You can go to monkey point and a temple on the top of the hill at Kasauli. This place is full of monkeys and entry is controlled by Army. So you have to produce an identity card to go inside. The local market is attractive and you can by some clothing but nothing special.
Activities & things to do: Morning and evening walks along the Himalayan road is enjoyable.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Book your accommodation in advance as the hotels are generally full during the weekends.

"Stay on clouds"

Kasauli Experience: The Hotel is located at very nice hill peak. The clouds were passing us and we were feeling like moving on clouds.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: The food is very nice. The destinations are near by like sunset point, Monkey point. The small shopping mall where you can enjoy every bit of move.
Activities & things to do: Devotion to Ram bhagat Hanuman mandir, Monkey point is the main attraction of Kasauli. You cant miss the Sunset point from where you can see the Whole city Chandigarh thru binaculars. Timber trail is also a nice stop over, where we can enjoy the Rope way ride to a very high peak hill and can enjoy the food out there.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: For Kasauli you must have your own Cab / Taxi as the bus connectivity is very limited and the buses are general govt transport. you must carry heavy woollens in winters (Nov to Feb), Light woolens in Sep-oct, & Mar

"Ross Common - leaves much to be desired"

Kasauli Experience: The hill station is picturesque and the views from hotel Ross Common are fabulous. The place itself is quaint and laid back and has an old world charm.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: The mall road is full of shops offering food and clothes to bags and gift items.
Activities & things to do: Do go to the monkey point in the day time specially on a clear day. You can have a view up to Chandigarh from the top. There is a small Hanuman temple which is revered by the residents.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Make a schedule to go around October November or then later after January. In December January due to heavy fog little can be seen from the various viewing points and commutation becomes difficult.

"a nice getaway"

Kasauli Experience: a good and serene place just 2 hours from chandigarh. good place for those who wish to go to a hill station without too much of hill travel. place offers beautiful view points, good british era buildings and hotels and excellent climate. one can hoose to stay in a number of heritage hotels which are converted british era buildings.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: a variety of hotels suiting all budgets are available. the place being old has really good choice of foods. sight seeing places are all at a walkable distance. best is the sunset point where you must see the sunsetting in hills. there are also good churches. you can also go for a hike if you are properly geared. not much of shopping to do as you have a much better option available at chandigarh.
Activities & things to do: hiking, walking in the calm roads and eating out. you can get a true feel of pre independence times by the look of the town.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: grab a train or bus to chandigarh. you can take a cab or a bus from sector 17 ISBT and just enjoy the ride.

"Kasauli - Better Unexplored"

Kasauli Experience: Kasauli undoubtedly has been able to retain its old charm unlike the other exploited Hill Stations.…Situated in the steep slopes of Himachal Pradesh, Kasauli is a small cantonment town with sloping tin roofs, letter boxes with Victoria Cross and taps from Raja-Maharaja times … The wooden buildings - a true piece of Architecture… Not to mention the nicest of local residents, making it a perfect getaway destination from Delhi...
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Better to dine-in...
Activities & things to do: Timber Trail located at the foothills of Shivalik Ranges in Parwanoo, nearly 6 km from Himachal Haryana border ...
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Gets real chilly even in early October...

"Himachal Paradise"

Kasauli Experience: Kasauli is a small army town nestled away at approximately 6000 ft on the way to the popular Shimla. Kasauli is fast becoming the dream getaway for anyone residing at Chandigarh, the closest airport to this hillstation. Since the Indian army has a base at this scenic place it is fiercely protected. Kasauli is still a hidden gem. The mountains are lush green, the resorts are few and far apart, vehicular exposure is limited and the air is just so pure. Some may even complain theres not much to do but therein lies the beauty. The peace and tranquility of the place is unmatched.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Shopping at Lower Mall road is like shopping at any small town mall road but the small cafes in between are the real grabbers. Theres one that serves up an irish coffee with some wicked omelete bread. Breakfast is a great option at these small cafes. The Kasauli Regency also has a live band playing at their rooftop bar which adds to the wonderful view the resort has to offer. One can pay a visit to both the Baptist Church, dated back to 1922, and the Christ Church with its stained glasspanes, in the heart of Kasauli.
Activities & things to do: The Monkey (Man Ki ) point view is breathtaking. Its location inside of the army camp makes it impossible to capture anything on camera but the memory of which will lay with you forever. Beware of the monkeys though. If you get the time do go down to the city of Dharampur and take the train ride. Its a fun experience especially if one is travelling with smaller kids. The sunset point at Kasauli is lovely. It entails a walk around to one of their highest points and no cars allowed beyond a certain point.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: We took the Kalka Mail express train from Delhi to Kalka station. The station is approx 40 km from the hill station so prepared to have a private car pickup. Kalka is a bustling town in itself but the climb is steep and getting around to a bus stand or a taxi would seem a tedious task. The closest airport is Chandigarh which is approx 60 Km from Kasauli.

"Kasauli in November"

Kasauli Experience: Kasauli..why the name reminds me of the dry fruit Chiraunji-I cannot say. But it is just as lip smacking! A quaint little hill station in Himachal Pradesh- Quiet, unadulterated and far from the madding crowds (unlike its more popular, crowded counterpart- Simla). It is a cantonment town and therefore devoid of the litter we (not me) contribute to so shamelessly otherwise. Besides the ample offer of the lush and green vistas of the hills, the place beckons to you to walk, walk and then walk some more.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: There is but a small stretch of shops that aim to cater to the entire hill station's needs of woollens and groceries. Kasauli has a complete and total colonial ambience, with all its nice old churches, cobbled roads, and the many, many summer homes with pretty facades, well manicured multi tiered lawns and such thoughtful names like The Raj Villa (Kushwant Singhs'), The Pine View, The Hill Queen, Cloud 9,The Morris (this one was a hotel) –each one with half a kilometer long private drivewayand tall bamboo fencing preventing prying eyes.Having explored Kasauli on foot, you will find (as did I with growing irritation) that there are a lot of warmer and more comfortable options of lodging available at cheaper rates. BUT thankfully The Ross Common beat all of them in terms of location. I glugged down a bottle of 'Tempest' cider. Mind you, this act was performed sitting outside the shop next to a billboard that informed that consumption of alcohol in public places was punishable with a 2500 rupee fine :-).But despite the inviting name-you can give the cider a miss. Food in the hotel was fresh, colorful and yummy. There were bottles of pickles and marmalade that I picked up as a gift for my grumbling husband back in Mumbai and proceeded to polish them off on my own. Fruits were not too great at this time of the year but I made it a point to feast on pakodas and very sweet (ugh) chai from a local chaiwala for the heck of it. The cold numbs the calories. If you have bought food and are on foot- hide the bag-inside your jacket or underneath your shawl- for the monkeys are a very greedy and fearless bunch
Activities & things to do: *Please carry your walking shoes and avoid doing the touristy thing of hiring a cab (you may probably contribute to the local economics but the fun of it is lost). There are three vantage points that one can walk to -although the taxi driver will insist he drives you-1) Sunrise point 2) Sunset Point and 3) Monkey point. 1) & 2) are self explanatory and 3) provides you an unparalleled view of the hills and the world below. Probably looks quite something in the night with lights twinkling and all.** For the ones with faith, there is a very famous Baba Balaknath temple in Gadkhal close by (4-5 kms) and on tuesdays and Sundays the priest (Guruji) receives special powers when he sits on the Gaddi . World weary people throng to the temple for all kind of resolution to their material problems (yeah, yeah so did I- Babaji please, please bless my lottery ticket :-) )***Feed stray dogs! I started with sandwiches and soon having depleted some precious greens (there were so many dogs) I switched to cheap Tiger biscuits. The mutts are cold, hungry (I may have also fed them Haldiram\'s bhujia),friendly and very furry-besides they catch biscuits mid air.****Walk on the road in the night- there is a patch near The Ross Common which is devoid of a single street lamp such that you become night blind. There could be a wild animal or a ghost walking with you and you’d only be able to sense it.*****Get someone to click good pictures!! Stout pine trees and stone wall back grounds are freely available for the job to be done well.******Apply for the position of Caretaker-because owners of almost all beautiful, well furnished cottages live elsewhere and come for the summers only. Lastly- pause a while and pity aloud at the permanent residents of beautiful Kasauli-who envy your 'big town' lifestyle- for they know not what they have.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: This was my fourth vacation in five months and my travel budget had shrunk. For those of you who do not have such a fortunate problem of plenty and face a pitiable paucity of time- fly to Delhi and take the Kalka Shatabdi. From Kalka you can call a pre arranged cab (ours happened to be a guy called Raju and later his brother Kittu (the latter has a cameo in some ‘soon-to- be- released’ movie called 'Champs Don't Cry'-and he spent better part of the journey telling us about it).As for me, I boarded Pashchim Express from Mumbai and the next day -late evening I was delivered straight to Kalka. Short and sweet? Not quite. The train was a nightmare with its brown upholstery, frightfully dirty curtains, many cockroaches and yes-rats! It was a shining example in lack of hygiene. I fasted right till twenty minutes before reaching Kalka-why? because I could not pop the Avomine (anti vomiting pill) on an empty stomach. For those who find the long and winding drive in the hills just as displeasing -take the pill! For the return journey I carried some oranges and wafers. Thankfully the train had blue upholstery this time around and was cleaner. Avoid buying the strange named (albeit well packaged) drinks and snacks while on board because as the train staff will themselves warn you “local hai-local!”
